geoff hill, fascinating _ perspective. geoff hill, fascinating to - perspective.ng us so early. and thank you as well. have a good day. hello there. wiggonholt in west sussex was the country's hot spot on sunday, with temperatures hitting 30 degrees celsius, making it the hottest day of september so far. not that we're very far into the month, of course. there was plenty of sunshine for east anglia and south east �*england, but rather cloudy skies for some, turned quite murky here in mousehole in cornwall. we've also seen showers and thunderstorms break out. this clump of storms that went through the north—west midlands earlier brought 14mm of rain in just the space of one hour, and over the next few hours, those heavy downpours will continue to drive northwards across northern england and into scotland as well. probably another batch of heavy rain then developing behind that into parts of wales. all the while it will stay quite warm and muggy. well, that takes us into monday, and monday is dominated by low pressure. we're expecting showers or some longer spells o

geoff: congressional leaders announced another short-term deal to punt more partisan fights over spending until after the election. lisa desjardins is tracking the movements on capitol hill joins me now. here we go again. what is in this deal exactly? lisa: this came together over the weekend from the republican and democratic leaders of congress. this would extend government funding -- before a new president would be sworn in. this includes $231 million for secret service and it especially says it can be spent now. concern for both parties protection including former president trump. there will not be any increased funding for veterans affairs. that is something democrats say they tried to get in this bill. the v.a.'s constraint right now for resources but republicans say they would not agree to it. this is standard procedure, but coming now in such a tense election year, both parties leadership realized the need to get this through. republican leaders don't want a shutdown and democrats want to focus on the election. geoff:? what are you watching for next? lisa: we do expect this to pass both chambers. it is a question of how dramatic is it? the house is likely to move

geoff: as you been speaking with voters across north carolina, what is your sense of where folks might be leaning? lisa: i got a strong sense of place in that community, mint hillry donald trump was at has grown in the last year, this is a place where the economy is good and feelings are generally good. prices are the problem for harris here. this is a community that are dealing with their divide together in a more dental and civil way -- gentle and civil way than i've seen other places. a lot of people say they don't like either candidate, they are not comfortable yet with harris. when i asked the more i heard a lot of people tell me they are less comfortable with donald trump. more people tell me i can't vote for him. not sure about her but i can't vote for him. that's why democrats have so much hope in this state. the ground game and turn it will matter but it is anyone's ballgame in north carolina. geoff: lisa reporting from charlotte, north carolina, thank you. stephanie: i'm stephanie sy with newshour west. here are the latest headlines. at the united nations general assembly today, ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy sought to keep the world's attent
