burned part of an apartment complex and killed an 8-year-old girl. the fire started just before 2:00 this morning in an apartment on hamilton avenue at meridian. george kiriyama is in san jose with the latest for us. george? >> well, diane, we've learned six families, more than 20 people, are staying somewhere else tonight. some with friends, others at a nearby hotel. a maintenance worker was boarding up a couple of apartment units. it was tough for many of the neighbors because an 8-year-old girl died in this fire. she was visiting from north carolina and was staying with relatives here at the apartments. firefighters found the 8-year-old in a back bedroom of a bottom apartment unit and pulled her out. she died an hour later. there were five other children and a couple of adults inside when the fire broke out. most of them were able to get out on their own. ten others were hurt in this fire. mostly scrapes and bumps and from breathing in too much smoke. the fire was pretty intense. >> what was the fire shooting out or -- >> i mean, bad. i've never seen anything like that in my life. bad. >> reporter: now most of the damage was kept to one apartment
