i'm george howell live in richmond, texas.looking up a few moments ago -- well it's a cloud covering it now i think. but you could see the moon which means very likely people here in the metro area will see the sun again. that's good news but it can be deceptive because the story in many of the neighborhoods is exactly what you see back here. this is the brazos river and still on the rise. many of the tributaries all flowing toward the gulf and many of them swollen, still rising. what that means is we'll still see neighborhoods in peril. still see many water rescues play out. cnn gary tuckman shows us one example of that in southwest houston. here is his story. >> rising water surrounds an upscale neighborhood in southwestern houston. firefighters from the small town of this in texas and we go and rescue. just a few minutes in the search a woman opens here door and yells that she and her husband want to be taken out but can't find their cat. brenta morewood and her husband are ehave lived here for decades. any say it has never

i'm george howell, live in houston, texas.t the southeast part of the state, rescue missions are ongoing and the scenes are dramatic. for a fifth day now, emergency workers and volunteers went door to door, answering calls for help in port arthur, texas. patients were evacuated from a nursing home. the mayor of that city says the entire town is under water. the u.s. navy flew search and rescue missions over beaumont, texas, as they lifted 25 men, women, and children from the floodwaters. and then look at this, this video of jonathan evolea, carrying an elderly woman on his back out of her home. he and his brother joshua were in that neighborhood that had been cleared out when they found two other elderly people and two children also inside that home. so, john, the rescues continue, the stories of survival are incredible. just raises the hair on your skin to think about what people went through, to think about the fact that they're here to tell those stories, and the optimism that they have about their next steps. powerful. >>

"the new york times" reports the office of special council robert mueller is seeking white house records on the former national security adviser michael flynn. though it's not a formal subpoena, the "times" said it's not the first notification that mueller's team has gone after the white house documents. the "times" also reporting whether flynn was seriously paid by the turkish government by the trump campaign. neither general flynn or his attorneys have responded to the report but there is a state

. >> and i'm george howell live here in houston, texas. midnight here at this convention center where thousands of people, some 8,000 people in fact are trying to get a good night's sleep in this shelter after surviving a storm quite frankly that destroyed so much. first the very latest on that storm harvey. it's weakened now to a tropical depression, but the damage that it's left behind, that will be felt here in this area for quite a long time to come. this storm battered port arthur, texas as it moved on. the mayor says the entire town underwater. 37 people have died since harvey hit this state as a hurricane last friday. a military spokesperson says it is still unclear how many people here in houston alone will still need to be rescued. the flooding is extensive. harvey has set a new u.s. record in fact for the most rainfall from a single storm. it dropped almost 52 inches of rain. that's 130 centimeters of rain as it soaked parts of the state. when you take into account how widespread the damage is from this storm, it makes the storie

i'm george howell at cnn world het quarters in laept.t's a major storm hitting the texas coastline right now. hurricane harvey, a category 3 storm. it's been downgraded from category 4, but don't let that fool you. you get from that satellite himmage, an idea how big this storm is. you see the eye wall clearly denined. official believe this will be one of the worst storms to hit the united states in decades. you can see, though, they've been doing some damage ripping apart this gas station. flooding is also a big concern as well. some parts of the state could get more than 3 feet. that's almost a full meter of rainwater. and the coast could see some of the largest storm surges as well. the city manager in texas has already said the damage is already expensive. many think harvey could be the most destructive storm to hit the country since hurricane katrina. many people are in its path. the president of the united states, donald trump has already approved a declaration of disaster before that storm hit land. carl joins us now by phone with
