george howell, cnn, hollister, missou missouri. >> now to the raging wildfire. there's dozens of homes that have burned to the ground. hundreds more are threatened. dan is in riverside, california. try to give us a scope of how big this fire is. >> reporter: first of all, let me explain this is an area that normally gets a lot of wind. that's why you have a wind mill farm behind me. it's even windier than usual. you add fire to the mix. the fire right now is burning in the wilderness away from homes. firefighters taking this fire seriously. you have 1600 firefighters on the line trying to get this fire under control. at this point it's 25% contained. in terms of the damage we have 26 homes that have been destroy and as you pointed out you still have several hundred more homes that are threatened. you have a lot of people under an evacuation order. several communities under a mandatory evacuation order and firefighters trying to do what they can to get this fire under control. >> firefighters are hoping for better weather conditions. this is over the next couple

george howell reporting.lood waters can raise to dangerously high levels in a matter of only a few minutes. over the last several days, we've seen some dramatic rescues, one image in particular is very hard to shake. take a look at this. firefighters outside nashville, tennessee, carry a baby through waist-high water rising fast. the baby is lauren marlin, just five weeks old. lauren won't have a memory of her rescue but her parents rebecca and jeremiah marlin won't forget it. a truly terrifying day for them. they join us with their baby daughter lauren and their son. we're so happy everyone is okay. rebecca, walk us through what happened. you're at home. you're watching the news. what happened then? >> i open the front door to watch the storm and i looked down and i noticed my entire front yard is covered in water, and i yell for my husband to get up, we're flooding. he jumps up, and he calls 911. they tell us to get into our attic and bust open the side vent up in the attic to let the firefighters know we'r

george howell shows us the damage from flash flooding. >> evacuation's continued in missouri.claimed the life of two people. the colors are so strong that it forced this crane on something. in tennessee, it was a devastating scene were people were helpless on their rooftops. and davidson county doesn't have to be rescued. just take a look at this building in nashville. a nearly unbroken have under the pressure of this overflowing creek. the cars were left drifting in the current. then this fire broke out. to fire fighters were caring this rope. they carry this baby to this war. this is all due to a storm system that is drifting through dozens of states. in benton county, ark. they put out a declaration after thunderstorms dumped 10 in. of rain. one resident had to put her blonde is on a bed because water is rushing toward her home. >> the glass started falling off walls. in pickens county, fla. rescue teams had to jump into a tiny creek. they had to rescue a man who was stranded. >> we are falling a hot spot on interstate 580. >> it is our loan hot spot on interstate 580 westb

george howell in missouri, thanks. >> let's go from the floods to a raging wildfire now.5 square miles have gone up in flames. riverside county is now under a state of emergency. let's bring in meteorologist jennifer delgado in the cnn severe weather center. is there any relief for this area in sight? >> unfortunately, it doesn't look like they're going to get the precipitation that they would like to get to help put out these fires. right now we do know they're only at 25% containment and current conditions, keeping the winds at 13 miles per hour, not registering any gusts, but for today and tomorrow, we are expecting dry conditions out there and we're also expecting some of those gusts through today and tomorrow to pop up to about 25 miles per hour. now, as we've seen in the video of the fires out there, again shall the silver fire and those started on wednesday, but we're going to continue to follow that as we go through the next couple days because it looks like they've got a ways to go. firefighters have quite a ways to contain this fire. we do know that reportedly 1

let's go live to branson, missouri, where cnn's george howell is standing by. good morning, george. >> reporter: chris, good morning. this time yesterday the water would have been well over my head, enough to devastate this community, this hidden valley trailer home. you can see enough force to move an entire trailer home and right now all eyes are right here on the water, the turkey creek. again you see it's a raging river at this point and people here worry that it could rise with more rainfall. evacuations and rescues continued in missouri, where flash flooding has claimed two lives. the most vulnerable, children and the elderly. the currents were so strong that it forced this construction crane up onto an already saturated landing. in tennessee, it was a devastating scene, with people helpless on rooftops. in davidson county dozens had to be rescued, including this young girl, and just take a look at this building in nashville. it literally broke in half under the pressure of a nearby overflowing creek. on the highway cars were left drifting in the current,

our george howell joins us now from chicago. as seen drastic budget cuts we've been paying attention to and a high number of gang related killings. it was a violent weekend. can you tell us what happened? >> brianna, absolutely. these safe zones in the neighborhoods, they are considered to be safe areas. even when workers are not on the job protecting kids. but as you mentioned, it was a violent weekend. starting on saturday when we know that the 14-year-old boy was shot and killed just a block away from a safe passage route. then on sunday, a 28-year-old man, police say, was shot in the neck. we understand that he is in guarded condition, but he was on a safe passage route. and then consider what happened just a week ago. we understand that five people were shot in front of a church. one of the victims died from that shooting. again, that happened on a safe passage route. now, chicago public officials with the school district, they do point out this important distinction. that none of these shootings happened during school hours

our george howell is live and chad myers is live at the extreme weather center. george, let me begin with you. clearly it looks like the flood has been through and gone but, man, this does happen fast. >> reporter: it happened really fast, ashleigh. in just a matter of minutes, this community was changed all a result of the turkey creek in holster, missouri. the creek at one point, just 24 hours ago, was as high as where i'm standing right now. i want to give you an example of what it did. you look at this trailer home here and people tell me that this trailer home was on the other side of the property over there. so it was strong enough to shift it, to push it over here. and this is also interesting. look at this home. the shane geling has been ripped off. this is a result of the rising water. but look at the things that are still in place, that weren't moved. it's always strange to see the power and force of a storm like this. and today what you see, you see people coming back with bulldozers here. people are coming back to their homes for the first time to see
