george howell is in rhode island. and chad myers with all of the details of the forecast that we're so curious about. but first, let's go to miguel marquez and, miguel, tell us a little bit about what people in new york are going to be expecting. i know that where i am i see people walking around but certainly the hope is that this is not the case even in the next several hours because even walking around the city is very dangerous. >> reporter: yeah people are bracing for the worst certainly. the stores here are overwhelmed with people getting in to get food. we're seeing a few bikers along the west side here. we should be able to see downtown new york the world trade center. it is nothing. as we're out here longer and longer the weather gets thicker and thicker. that snow heavier and heavier. we can see less and less of downtown. this is the west side highway here and in just the last couple hours that we have been here it's gotten much thicker on the ground. the snow is starting to stick. despite the many many truc

cnn's george howell is on the case. he joins us live. sting part of this story, if the story itself is isn't interesting enough, george, this young man is not only accused of these awful charges but also accused of trying to get his own siblings to sort of come along on his plots? >> reporter: that is the case, ashleigh. the siblings were with him at the airport when this happened. however, they were detained and released the same day. the charges are against mohammed khan, at this point. the hearing today was quick and short. he was formally arraigned. he entered a plea of not guilty. he was arrested back in october at chicago's o'hare international airport with a round-trip ticket, his plans were to leave chicago for vienna, austria, and then to transfer into istanbul, turkey, to allegedly meet up with a contact who would take him into territory that isis claims it controls in iraq and syria. his attorney plans to argue a very technical defense here, basically that his client was not going to provide material support, not money, not sup

. >> cnn's george howell is in portland, maine.e he is. >> reporter: so i want to show you the situation here in portland maine. when you look around, you can see snowplows are doing the best that they can do to clear the streets. but look at these snow berms. in some cases, it's up to my waist. a lot of snow fell in just a short amount of time. some 16 to 18 inches fell and they picked up another 6 to 7 inches overnight. so a lot of snow to deal with. and then also the winds. the winds have been intense. you can see from time to time these winds just blowing through the snow blows, as well. it's created whiteout conditions but here's the thing, officials did ask folks to stay at home to stay off the roads so crews could do their work. in many cases the roads have been very clear so that the crews can clear these streets. now it's a matter of waiting to see when all of the snow melts. that could take a couple of weeks before business gets back to normal here in portland. george howell cnn, portland maine. >>> a former russian spy m

george howell is in providence rhode island. torm is headed your way right now. are folks ready for what's coming? you already have travel bans starting imminently. >> reporter: the people are prepared here. take a look over here. you can see plows are already out. they're doing their besht to keep these streets and roads as clear as possible. here's the thing, we heard this from officials, it will snow faster than they can plow the streets. the most interesting thing, though you don't see any people on the streets. people are heeding that warning to get off the streets after 8:00 p.m. eastern time. midnight there is a curfew in rhode island where you can't be on the road. you could get a ticket. here's another sign. if i can catch this. there's plenty of salt out here. the trucks are doing their best to keep the roads salted. as best they can. but keep in mind this is going to be a very strong storm system. it will be tough to keep up with this one we're hearing from the guys on the ground. >> reporter: a big challenge. they onl

national correspondent george howell is in portland maine, for us. he's got the latest there. >> reporter: john christine, i want to show you here really the tail end of this storm where they got most of the snowfall. portland maine, look around here. and you see these snow berms. in some cases, i mean these are really up to my waist. they got some 16 to 18 inches of snowfall here in portland. it's not unusual for this city to get that much snow but again, in one storm system it is a lot for them to deal with. we've seen snowplows going up and down the street doing their best to clear the roads. and then jordan can we look down the street there? i want you to see where the snowplow is. you see also the blowing snow? we've seen a lot of that. the winds have been very intense out here to the point where it could lead to whiteout conditions for a lot of the people you know if they were to venture out onto the roadways. again, most people are staying home. they were advised to stay off the streets. and now it's a matter of waiting for all of the snow guy

george howell is there for us. you're in illinois tonight. how is the community dealing with this?> reporter: you know anderson it really is sort of a mix of emotions here in this town. on one hand people are celebrating what many call a miracle, the fact that this 7-year-old girl that sailor gutzler managed to survive a plane crash and, at night, make her way through the brush and trees to find help. people are grateful she's alive. on the other hand look this is a community in mourning at the loss of the gutzler family and the fact that sailor must now grow up without her mother her father her sister and her cousin. and, really that affects people hew erin many different ways. this is a community where people take pride, small town in where people take pride in knowing each other. a town of about 3,200 people. i understand about a third of the population nearly 900 people attend the same church anderson the trinity lutheran church where marty gutzler attended church. take a listen to what his pastor had to tell us this evening. >> this is a devastation for our community, a commun

. >> i do not envy you out there, george howell.ant to go down to scituate massachusetts, where the seawall was breached and we have alexandra steele there this eve evening. and you were there as some of the water was coming over the seawall and were you able to see it and how was it? >> well, it was wild and furious sight to to see, don. the seawall is right down the road where i was standing, and we were right there before the seawall broke, and we saw the rocks and the sticks and the debris, and with what happened this morning is that the waves flooded the entire street. it flooded yards and basements out here, and a big swath of this neighborhood. it is something that they are used to see, but it is a great deal of water stay there. been through so much here in scituate in boston just south of boston boston. a lot more of the the flooding, and after the roads with were flooded with water, it turned to ice and slush and then you saw more of the high tide and more water flooding the seawall. the water was just lapping over but muc

blizzard warnings in parts of new england tonight, including in portland maine, where george howell joins us now. what's it like there, george? >> reporter: it's a lot of snow out here anderson. if you look out here you can see the snow berms are pretty high. this is not unusual now for portland maine. but at the same time it is a lot of snow to deal with. really on the tail end of this storm system. so, what we're seeing now, we're expecting over the next two to three hours, the last few bands to come through here. when that happens, we expect the winds will die down a bit. the winds are pretty intense and right now we're kind of in between snow bands. the last snow band came through just about five or ten minutes ago. >> it's been windy like that all day, right, george? >> reporter: yeah. i mean it's been pretty intense. we got up here just about an hour and a half ago. you know when we got here the winds were really really high. we're in sort of a lull right now. let's move over guys while this snowplow comes on through. i don't want anyone to get hit by the snowplow of course. what yo

george howell is in providence rhode island.th anna cabrera on the new york coastline. >> reporter: rosemary errol we are on the very end of long island. this is montauk which is a small fishing community currently getting pummelled. you see the snow just blowing all across the roadway here. this is main street. this is the downtown area. and you see not a soul in sight as the storm really bears down. this is an area expected to get two to three feet of snow by the time this is all over. and in fact that's supposed to continue well into tuesday afternoon. the biggest concerns here are not just the snow but the high winds. wind gusts that are near hurricane force, that are also pushing a huge storm surge into this island community. they are anticipating possible coastal flooding. they're anticipating possible erosion of the beach as 15-foot waves battle the shore. so there are multiple multiple challenges for this community. and power outages, that's another big concern. we saw power out for weeks after superstorm sandy. in this
