i'm george howell. you're watching our special cnn coverage of the paris terror attacks. police confirm the man who organized friday's attacks is dead. abdelhamid abaaoud was killed in that massive predawn raid in saint-denis on wednesday. meanwhile, authorities are searching for salah abdeslam. he is the first national, often called the eighth suspect, possibly the only one who survived friday's attacks. jim sciutto has that story. >> reporter: an urgent manhunt is under way across europe as police continue to search for at least one suspected attacker, still at large and still dangerous. salah abdeslam briefly stopped by french police hours after the attacks, but then let go before authorities knew of his role in friday's deadly rampage. six new raids in belgium overnight, and hundreds more in france in recent days have failed to catch it. >> translator: the republic is doing everything it can to destroy terrorism. >> reporter: french security service have netted perhaps their most dangerous suspects,

"cnn newsroom" starts right now. >>> good day to you. we start with the investigation into metrojet flight 9268. european investigator, they are convinced that the crash of that plane was intentional. this according to cnn affiliate france 2. the report says the black boxes indicate everything was fine for the first 23 minutes of flight. then, a sudden blackout which suggests a bomb. aviation analysts say the data would be different if the plane broke apart because of mechanical or structural failures. now we are hearing reports of a vacation flight out of the u.k. that had a very close equal a missile back in august as it approached sharm el sheikh airport. cnn is covering the story from all angles around the world. our senior national correspondent ben wedeman live in cairo, egypt, and dirnl diplomatic editor nic robertson is live in st. petersburg, russia. first to ben in cairo. in the coming hours, we expect to hear a statement on the investigation. what can we expect to hear? >>

i'm george howell. good day to you. we start with the crash of metro jet flight the 268. recovery crews are still in the peninsula searching for bodies in the wreckage. there were 224 people on that flight. no survivors. most on board were russians. they were flying to st. petersburg from a resort town. it's not exactly clear what caused the plane to crash. egypt's civil aviation minister says there were no warning signs. >> translator: if the pilot doesn't report any faults on the plane, all that will be carried out is routine maintenance checks. there were no reports that the airplane had faults. the checks done before takeoff did not reveal anything. up until the crash happened, we were never informed of any faults in the plane, nor did we receive any s.o.s. calls. >> both flight recorders have been recovered and are being analyzed in cairo. they believe some sort of mechanical problem cautioned the crash. they don't believe terrorism was a factor, that despite a claim of responsibility from isis. le

"cnn newsroom" starts right now. > >>> good day to you. we start in the sinai peninsula. weather there has been a factor hampering the investigation into the crash of metro jet flight 9268. in a news kfrps, the lead investigators stayed debris is strewn across a wide area. about 13 kilometers. he said the voice recorder picked up a suspicious noise in its final seconds. the official was quick to also add that, despite the noise and that wide scattered debris field, it's still too soon, too early to be sure whether a bomb brought that plane down. cnn is covering the story from all angles. let's go first to ian lee, standing by in sharm el sheikh where that flight originated. ian, good to have you with us. let's talk about the investigation first. there is focus on that noise. but neither russia nor egypt, which is leading the investigation is coming out saying that this is a bomb. what more do we know? >> reporter: well, george, when you look at this, in the beginning of this investiga

i'm george howell. the pentagon says u.s. forces targeted the infamous jihadi john during an air strike in raqqa, syria. mo ham emwazi has appeared in isis videos showing the murders of hostages. he is a british citizen believed to have been born in kuwait. the pentagon has not publicly confirmed his death. new video appears to show the surviving suicide bomber from thursday's attack in beirut. two suicide blasts killed more than 40 people and left more than 200 people wounded. a lebanese national apparently shown here was taken into custody, but cnn cannot independently confirm that videos's authenticity. kurdish officials say pesh merger fighters will be inside iraq, inside the town of sinjar soon to clear explosives and seize it from isis control. they launched a new offensive late wednesday to retake the key city and to cut militants supply lines. russia is trying to awe thent cat an alleged isis video,er threatening attacking inside that country, quote, very soon. the five-minute video was released thursday. it shows rus

here is cnn's george howell. >> they were students and teachers, concert goers and football fans, hundredsl walks of life injured, and tragically more than 100 killed. there are still families waiting for word as to whether their loved ones will be coming home. others though already know theirs won't. here are some of the victims. from france, one of the first victims to be named a parisian lawyer described as a talented lawyer and extremely well liked. an employee of the news agency france 24, a young father and lover of rock music killed at the bataclan. from the united states cal state long beach student nehomi gonzalez, her mother says she hopes she's remembered. she was in paris as a foreign exchange student. nick alexander from britain. he was working with the eagles of death metal band when the attack happened. an italian citizen also killed at the bataclan according to italy's foreign minister. the 28-year-old venice native was studying in paris. from chile, a musician who had lived in paris for eight years. and patricia and her daughter, niece and grand niece respectively of the c
