people like john hay george stuart and others. as well as some presidents.ese men wrote about their interactions with the native people in the city. so there will be good material there. another body of sources that exists here that i think is crucial to this project is the collection of tourist guide books and customs manuals from the 19th and early 20th century. my preliminary search for these turned up over 140 in the library. now obviously some of these are reprints. there is a lot here. these tourist guide books were in the 19th century for people coming to visit washington. essentially there is, you know, a short section on all of the different federal buildings, some of the different neighborhoods and things like that. they also contain amazing anecdotes, stories about there was a hotel called the union hotel on the 13th on pennsylvania that was known across the city as indian headquarters because they catered primarily to native delegations. so those guide books are a useful source. beyond that the customs manuals were written by white women -- elite

later on, the muskogee nation delegates were dining with george washington at his home. and the artist john trumble was there. and john trumble had had just completed the iconic portrait of washington, the life-size portrait of him, in his military outfit. and washington wanted a visual joke to be played on the muskogee delegates. and he had trumble put the painting on one side of the door that washington then opened so the delegates could see him. and then see him in his outfit in the painting. and they loved it. and everyone had a good laugh. and they felt it and didn't like the way it felt. so john trumble asked if he could paint them. and they said no. but he did draw them surreptitiously over that evening and throughout the week that they were there. and those drawings are in this exhibit. they're just beautiful drawings. and unlike anything that trumble really did, that's because he was doing it in secret. and i'm so glad he did that, even though the delegates didn't want that to be done. because it's the closest thing we have to a photograph of who the native negotiators were. and i
