nbc george lewis is in antioch, california, with the very latest. george, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. police are looking for any evidence that might tie phillip garrido, the man accused of masterminding the abduction to a string of local unsolved murders. one piece of evidence, a fragment of bone. monday evening dogs trained to sniff for human remains returned to the home of phillip garrido and the property next door as police announced the discovery of the bone fragment at that adjoining property. >> we're taking that bone back for further examination. we don't know if it's human or animal. >> reporter: as police broadened their investigation, they're trying to find out whether phillip garrido was tied to a string of unsolved murders. they're also looking at whether he had anything to do with other kidnappings. in 1988 9-year-old michaela was pulled off a street into a car in broad daylight, just like jaycee dugard. the two girls bear an uncanny resemblance to each other. now police are talking to michaela's parents. >> we have

>> all right, george lewis, thank you very much. an zandt is an nbc news analyst and former fbi profiler. clint, good morning to you. >> hi, meredith. >> hey. as george mentioned, there have been some bone fragments discovered on site. some are still being analyzed. some are, apparently, the remains of an animal. what are the obstacles that these authorities face in their search for human remains? >> well, part of the challenge is that this is almost like an egyptian archeological dig. they have to go through inch by inch, foot by foot. they have to sift this. you know, they're looking for bone fragments, clothing fragments, anything like that. and in their hunt, they're using two different types of dogs. number one, a cadaver dog, as you know, that will try to detect human remains, as well as, they have a specialized bone dog that is out there strictly looking for bones. then they have fbi and other agencies using ground-penetrating radar, trying to find some indication that something could be buried under ground. but you ow, these

nbc's george lewis has more. >> reporter: the photos were shot by the county building department late last month just before building inspectors declared the garrido house condemned. unfit for human habitation. the photos were released to the media after a public records request. the inside of the house is in complete disarray with pieces of furniture piled on top of one another and papers strewn on the floor. mounds of dirty pots and dishes in the kitchen. the bedrooms are also a mess. personal belongings strewn everywhere. authorities allege these are the kinds of conditions jaycee dugard and her two daughters lived in during the time they were kept by phillip and nancy garrido who have pled not guilty to all the criminal charges against them. now authorities are mounting a new search at the house to see if the garridos can be tied to a pair of unsolved kidnap cases in northern california. today investigators will begin digging in that area also using ground-penetrating radar in their search. george lewis, nbc news, los angeles. >>> the massachusetts house of representatives has giv

here's nbc's george lewis. >> reporter: what triggered this new investigation at the garrido home isn attempt to find possible evidence linking the couple to a pair of unsolved kidnappings that took place well before jaycee dugard was abducted. >> from what i know, the tips that have come in, this is one of the strongest leads thus far. >> reporter: in 1988, this 9-year-old was kidnapped in hayward, california. the photos of her bear a strong resemblance to jaycee dugard. and the method of kidnapping was the same. both girls grabbed in broad daylight by someone inside a car. this is a police sketch of the suspected kidnapper in the garrett case. it resembles a photo of phillip garrido taken in 1976. >> my first thought, when i heard that jaycee was found, was please, god, let michaela be with her. >> reporter: in the other abduction, this 13-year-old has been missing since 1989. police say a car found on the garrido property in an earlier search is similar to one a witness described eileen getting into on the day she disappeared. >> have equated what they're working in back there to

nbc's george lewis is there in antioch, california. what is the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: yeah, it's going to take several weeks for them to figure out whether that bone fragment is anything significant. it might be an animal bone buried on the property. they are not sure. they want to check thoroughly. they are sifting through the evidence thoroughly. the search on the garrido property ended now. the cadaver dogs, and the two dozen or so officers who were digging in the back of the property are all gone. they put up chain-link fencing around it. they red tagged the house meaning it's unsafe to be occupied by humans and anybody on the property will be arrested for trespassing. the lab work now begins. it's interesting. police are also talking to people involved in other kidnappings, which have an mo similar to the kidnapping of jaycee lee dugard. there are a couple bay area children that were kidnapped in the late '80s. they are talking to their parents. those cases are being reexamined as police look for any links betwe

. >> nbc's george lewis has the latest from burbank now. did the judge make today, george? >> reporter: the next hearing will be on october 29th. at that point, they may set a date for a preliminary hearing that is where they would call witnesses to establish a case against the garridos to see if there is enough evidence to take them to trial. we shouldn't make too much out of this $30 million bail business because phillip garrido is also being held on a parole hold, so in effect, he is still being held without bail even though the judge set this hypothetical amount for him. he was in court today. this is from a previous court hearing. this is from his previous court appearance. you see those moles on his nose. today, he had a bandage on his nose. it looks like they had some surgery to remove the moles. he has also got a new growth of beard, a little stubble of beard on his chin. and his attorney mentioned something about the surgery to remove the moles. so, that's about all we know that's new in the garrido case at this point, contessa. >>

george lewis is in antioch, california. it seems like there is still room for interpret here. why are they saying probably human but let's not jump to conclusions? >> well, here's the deal, contessa, they think this is a human bone, but is it kecked to this case? they don't know. and the one cautionary note they inject in this, there are a lot of native american burial grounds in this area. this is also in a floodplain, bone fragments could have washed from one of those burial grounds onto the adjoining property here next to the garrido house, that is an area in the backyard where philip garrido was once the caretaker and had access to the property. so, they are not sure what that bone fragment is what they are going to do they are taking it to a state lab, going to have it dated to see how old it is. they are going to do dna analysis on it just trying to pin that bone down. now you can the reason for this is that investigators have a number of unsolved crimes, including unsolved murders, and they are trying to see if there is any evidence, any possible evidence that might tie

george lewis is in burbank today. what are you expecting to see out of the court hearing today? argument they should be let out on bail. legal experts tell us that is probably an exercise in futility because of the seriousness of the charges they are charged with. bail will probably not be granted. the judge could set a date for a preliminary hearing in the case as the wheels of justice grind guard. the garridos have been kept in the county jail apart from the general population of jail prisoners there because of concerns about their safety. it's likely they will continue staying in the el dorado county jail for the foreseeable future as the legal process goes on. >> i've seen some reports that there have been other inmates who have threatened the pair. they are facing here 29 felony counts. are all of those related to jaycee dugard and her kidnapping? >> yeah, exactly. it's all related to the kidnap, rape, and the detainment of daysee dugard over this period of 18 years when she bore two children allegedly to phillip garrido and she and the children were kept in a compound behi
