george lewis is in los angeles with the latest on this. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. a police source tells nbc news the man who shot himself is believed to be the same man who murdered publicist ronni chasen two weeks ago. they haven't identified the shooter as yet. this whole thing have left people in the mo offy industry shocked. police arrived at this hollywood apartment house about sundown wednesday. when they confronted the man in the lobby, he pulled a gun. >> the person they were looking for showed up. they attempted to talk to the suspect. when they did, the suspect produced a handgun and there was a self-inflicted gunshot wound at that point in time, and the suspect was pronounced at the scene. >> reporter: beverly hills officers confirmed the man was tied into the murder of hollywood publicist ronni chasen, although they're not yet calling him a suspect. >> our detectives were here on a follow-up and this person was a person of interest from the chasen incident. that's all we have at this point >> reporter: residents said the incident brought out scores of p

in a moment, we'll talk to one of ronnie chasen's long-time friends, but first, nbc's george lewis has the latest on the case. george, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. police aren't saying where the 3-week-old investigation stands, but it now appears the investigation is back to square one this morning. a few days after ronnie chasen was murdered in this beverly hills neighborhood -- >> she was rushed to the hospital, but died an hour later. >> a tipster called the tv show, "america's most wanted" to say that this man, ex-convict, arold smith, had been bragging wanted" called the tf show to say that he did it. after the show's produceders alerted the police and they confronted him, he killed himself. in a friday press release, the beverly hills police department says, quote, at this time it's unknown if the individual was involved in the chasen homicide. it's now been widely reported that ballistics tests that he used to kill himself was not the gun used in the chasen murder. >> the chasen investigation has gone back to its roots now, it's a mystery, the digging, the ground

. >> george lewis, thank you very much. >>> a former fbi profiler, clint, good morning to you. >> hi, matt. >> before we talk about harold smith, let me ask you a ballistics question. the preliminary report said the gun did not match the murder weapon for ronni chasen and now the preliminary report says it does. what's going on? >> i think we still have a preliminary report. one thing they look at is the slugs that went into the victim, looking at the lens and grooves on the slugs and want to say it's a 9 millimeter, semi automatic pistol. it looks like this slug has been fired from this barrel. somehow initially, they said it hadn't. who ever said that in this police department, we don't know. preliminarily, they still have to do more work. one of the things that's strange, if it's a semi automatic pistol, each time it was fired the shell casing was ejected out. if she was shot five times, five shell casings should have been bouncing around the street. you have this guy one hand on a bicycle and one hand firing a gun and the third hand catching empty shells as they're bouncing out. t
