the report tonight from nbc's george lewis. >> reporter: kelly thomas was a 37-year-old homeless drifter who liked to hang out around the main bus station. after being beaten by police last month, he died. >> citizens are being beat to death. >> it was murder. >> reporter: at a contentious city council meeting last night, people called for the police involved in the incident to be criminally charged. >> game's over. >> reporter: they're riled up over videos of the incident posted on youtube. on a bus security camera, witnesses can be heard commenting on the six officers hitting thomas. >> they're pulling his hair, kicking the [ bleep ] out of him. >> reporter: this one shot by a witness is indistinct, but thomas can be heard calling out for his father. >> screaming, begging for his life, telling the officers, i'm sorry, i'm sorry. god, help me, please. and then, of course, the end of it, last thing in his life were dad, dad. >> reporter: kelly thomas' father ron, a former orange county sheriff's deputy has been an active participant in all of the protests over his son's death. this secur

. >> joining me now is nbc's george lewis, and he was taken off of life support july 10th, and his father been fighting ever since, and there are calling for the resignation of the police chief, and what is the latest on the possible lawsuit i understand? >> well, we will have a news conference later on this afternoon with ron thomas' attorney. ron thomas has let it be known that he is going to sue the city, and probably for millions and millions of dollars over the death of his son, 37-year-old kelly thomas, who was homeless and schizophrenic. and the father has been vocale and many demonstrations in front of city hall, and calling for the resignation of the police chief. they are trying to recall three of the city council members that the city is bracing for this lawsuit, and in an emergency city council meeting this morning, they have talked about hiring an outside consultant who will conduct his own independent investigation of what the police did. kelly thomas' father, ron, wants the police charged with murder, but he had a meeting today with the district attorney, and he tells us th

nbc's george lewis is in los angeles with the details. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. at least a dozen babies were sold illegally according to prosecutors by attorney theresa erickson and two others involved in the conspiracy. erickson who practices law in the san diego area is well-known to many parents who have had their children via surrogate mothers. she calls herself the surrogacy lawyer and she's used youtube and radio to advise people on how to connect with surrogate mothers and the agencies that handle these cases. >> it's important to ask questions, slow down, think about what you're getting into, and speak with a lawyer or your physician before you sign an agreement. >> reporter: to be legal, the prospective parents and surrogate mother have to sign the agreement before the surrogate gets pregnant. but erickson was charged with flouting the law, illegally selling babies. >> i felt like my entire world was turned upside-down. i was devastated. i was upset, shocked, to say the least. >> reporter: this woman who wants to b
