[ screaming ] >> reporter: ben cecil in the bleachers with his family shot the video. >> to be honest it's hard for me to talk about. there was about one to one and a half seconds he was pointed right at us. i started to flinch and then, miraculously for my family, he pulled up and misses the bleachers. >> reporter: the video and earlier released still photos show part of the tail section called a trim tab missing. investigators from the ntsb found it over the weekend. the plane also carried a video camera and flight data recorder. the information stored on memory cards like this one. investigators think they have recovered some of the cards and they are hoping to find useful data. the plane had been heavily modified for racing -- the wings clipped and the engine souped up for speed. the pilot, 74-year-old jimmy leeward. >> i know the speed. i know it will do the speed. the systems aren't proven yet. we think they're going to b

nbc's george lewis is in reno with the latest developments for us. george, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, lester. the ntsb announced tonight that the plane in question carried a video camera and an onboard data recorder, that both used data cards like this one, commercially available. such cards were found at the crash site and now being sent to washington, d.c. for analysis. the crash dug a hole in the airport tarmac, right in front of the vip section. today, the national transportation safety board was still picking up the pieces. >> they have identified and recovered portions of the accident aircraft tail. >> reporter: that's potentially important because in the moment just before the plane plummeted to the ground, still photographs show a piece of its tail section missing. that could have caused the pilot to lose control. some answers about that could come from those memory cards. >> these could be critical for us to perform analysis that could allow us to examine structural issues based on this information. >> reporter: piloting the wo

george lewis is in utah.e officials are saying about whether or not there have been human remains found? >> reporter: what they've found they've been using cadaver dogs trained to sniff out human remains and the dogs alerted on a site that police describe as aisha low grave in the desert about 150 miles south of here so they are continuing to dig at that site. they've gone down a couple of feet, haven't found anything yet but continuing to dig this morning. there is a second search going on in that immediate area. why this area? it's a place not far from where susan powell's husband, josh, took their two young sons camping overnight, the night she disappeared almost two years ago so police are concentrating on that area. meantime, susan powell's father, chuck cox, is on his way down there. he wants to have a look at the area for himself. it's not sure that police will let him into the actual site where they're doing the digging but he wants to be nearby just in case they find something, so the search is going

nbc's george lewis is live outside the courthouse. george, what can we expect in addition to the testimony from the paramedics? what else can we expect to hear today? >> well, i think when we finish with this expert from the medical monitoring company, we're going to hear those two paramedics talk about what happened when they arrived at jackson's bedroom. their frantic efforts to try to revive him. what dr. murray was doing. and i think you're going to hear from the paramedics that dr. murray was rounding up vials of medication and putting them in a bag. they're trying to establish a case against murray thatwas ability acting like a guilty man. the paramedics will testify, as they did in the preliminary hearing that murray never mentioned giving jackson the powerful anesthetic propofol. yesterday we heard from one of jackson's assistant, alberto alvarez, who talked about putting some of those medications in a bag. let's listen to that. >> in my personal experience, i believe that dr. conrad murray had the best intentions for mr. jacks

nbc's george lewis will have a deeper look coming up on "nightly news" right after this newscast. >>> a group of clerics say they believe the release of the uc berkeley hikers is imminent, however, still no deal. the clerics went to iran where the two are imprisoned hoping to bring them back but shane bauer and josh fattal are still in jail in iran. they have been detained two years. iran's foreign minister says the hikers sentences could be commuted as a gesture of islamic mercy. another high-ranking official says the hikers are spies who should not be rewarded by being released. >>> the company responsible for the oil spill in san francisco bay will pay $44 million for the environmental catastrophe. the state announced that the owners of the ship will reimburse millions for the cleanup and restoration efforts. the 53,000-gallon oil spill happened in 2007 after the tanker hit the bay bridge. the accident killed thousands of birds and closed bay area beaches to recreation and fishing. fishermen have already reached a settlement for loss of livelihood because of that spill. >>> how do

. >> george lewis, another glimpse into the chaos that was happening as michael jackson lay there dying. >> the paramedic said he asked dr. murray if he was on medication and he said no, he had given him lorazepam or at van which was an anti-anxiety medication. he had lines running for jackson's bed. it didn't make sense to him. if they follow the order they followed in the preliminary hearing, there was going to be another paramedic on the stand by this afternoon who will back up the story and say he saw murray rounding up bottles of various medications and that other paramedic, martin blunt, will say it didn't make sense to him either and murray never mentioned giving him propofol and there was no mention of that as he got jackson and headed towards the hospital. it appears to both paramedics that jackson looked like he was dead when they arrived in earlier testimony and the preliminary hearing. they described jackson as looking like a hospice patient when they got there and said dr. murray was working over him frantically. the paramedics thought it was too late. >> prosecutors also c

george lewis is live with the latest for us. one more person has died in the awful crash and still trying to put together what happened there. >> yeah, they may have new clues that will help the ntsb investigators, a bunch of computer chips like this one. memory chips found amid i wreckage. that old plane, the world war ii p 51 mustang had modern technology on board. a video camera and a flight data recorder that would give information about what that plane was doing in the crucial moments before the crash. that video actually shows a piece of the plane's tail section missing. a trim tab off the tail and without that trim tab, the pilot had a very hard time maintaining control of the plane. that could explain the violent pitch upward and the straight down crash into the tarmac. i talked to the young man who shot the video. the dramatic video. he said for a moment when he was looking through the view finder, he thought the planes were headed towards him and they were all going to die. he said it could have been a lot worse. >> we

lewis morris. caller: couple of questions. medicare, durable medical equipment, would eliminate a lot of the fraud. many years ago, when georgeush was president, mike levitt, head of hhs, wrote a piece about this, durable medical equipment. he was talking about oxygen concentrators. you can buy one for cash, $600, and medicare pays $200 a month for a three-year lease, and it still has not been fixed. address thesebody issues? is outrageous. guest: two interesting points. first, the one related to managed care, medicare advantage -- there has been a lot of analysis of whether the managed- care model is more cost- effective. much to the surprise of many, it does not save the medicare program much money. i don't agree have found a silver bullet yet, although we will keep looking for it. the other example of using -- the other issue of using the oxygen concentrator, for example, is that certain amount of money paid for something that if you went into a drugstore you could buy for a whole lot less. some of that is the antiquated way we price for services. some of that, to be very frank, is the powerful lobby in washington to make
