porter, and what became known as the army of the potomac, had not the armies commander been george mcclelland. who suffered from more than a little tone deafness of his own on the subject. instead, porter grew closer and more confiding to mcclellan, and mcclellan played porter more and more as a favorite. mcclelland cultivated new york democratic politicians and encouraged porter to do likewise. he also cultivated new york democratic newspaper men like man tim marble of the new york world and, unlike unwisely, porter did so also. none of this went unnoticed in congress or the executive mansion. he ward mcclelland and may that it had become all well-known that you consult and communicate with nobody but general fitz john porter. when lincoln mandated a reorganization of the army of the potomac into french model army corpse, porter's name was not among the division managers promoted to core command. not that they seem to matter once the army of the potomac finally embarked on his great peninsula campaign in the spring of 1862. mcclellan appointed fitz john porter, director of the siege of yorkt

george mcclelland, only wants to do is put the union back together. he doesn't have interest in freeing slaves. he doesn't penalize the confederates. he wants to put the union back together as it was. if he takes richmond, and the war does and. things can be a lot different. because lincoln didn't decide each of the emancipation proclamation into after lee has driven mclaughlin away from richmond. it's coming to the four, before d.c.. because of the emancipation complication -- if we don't know what that would look like today. it was a big moment. one other thing i want to talk about, a few years ago, chris scott with me and asked me if i can find out where joe johnson actually got wounded. it seems to be a mystery. so, i gowith bob vitrenko, he's brilant. and we went to his office one day. he pulled this map out. you'll see the's a house here it's called hitchcock, can't make it up. you can see the railroad. he hasa report, -- was johnston's aide. he said johnston went to the railroad tracks, turn around, and went 200 yards. which is just about where

george mcclelland has rebuilt the union army. johnston can read a map. he knows the u.s. navy is more powerful than the confederate navy. they can transport people down any river in virginia and come on in behind him. that is actually mclelland plan. he plans to go to a place called around a. that would put him behind johnston. johnston realizes this is a real possibility, so he pulls the army back behind the river. davis is not happy about this. he has given up a lot of territory. he's given up a meatpacking plant in manassas. their communication is so bad. johnston thought he had approval. in the meantime, mcclellan realizes he can no longer execute his or ban a plan. he's going to go down to form an row on the tip of the virginia peninsula. you're probably familiar with this. he starts moving up the river, up the peninsula, excuse me. john bank head magruder was in chge of about 13,000 confederates. he's built a line along the warwick river all the way to the -- he has blocked up the warwick river so it's almost impossible. he only has 13,000 man. he's out numbered abo

it's an open issue but [inaudible] >> you guys mentioned several times, you mentioned the george mcclelland pen and the -- in today's parlance that would name image likeness. i'm just curious and you guys as work space if you came across -- if the time period was correct, if any of the people depicted there had any thoughts on their use representing those products if they were for it, if they were against it, or if it's just the way they was and they're in civil and toward it? >> i have no idea. laws where those are back then. >> then i've been successful in my question.
