when presidential candidate george mcgovern desperately needed a new running mate, he called sergeanto-to guy, shriver died today after a long battle with alzheimer's disease. harry smith tells his story. >> reporter: sergeant shriver was never elected to public office but few americans could match his life dedicated to public service. >> i have today signed an executive order providing for the establishment of the peace corps. >> reporter: in 1961, president kennedy asked shriver to lead the peace corps, a volunteer army of young people sent to work in developing countries. >> they've got to have an internal motivation. they have to have an internal conviction. >> reporter: in 50 years, more than 200,000 americans have served in 100 different countries. it is shriver's lasting legacy. born in maryland in 1915, shriver worked his way through yale university, and then yale law school. he enlisted in the navy during world war ii and fought in the battle of guadalcanal. he married eunice kennedy, john f. kennedy's sister, in 1953. the shrivers settled in chicago and had five children, in

he was second choice for vice president under george mcgovern whose original running mate tom eagletoned out because he had psychiatric treatment. the ticket of mcgovern/shriver lost every state but massachusetts and the district of columbia. shriver's own run four years later lasted only a few months. a poignant moment came when his wife died. sargent shriver already in the grips of alzheimer's, waived after her departing hearse, not wanting to let go of his partner of 56 years. his daughter maria spoke often of her father's illness. and its impact on the family. >> he still goes to mass every day, he remembers the hail mary, but he doesn't remember me, maria. i'd be lying if i didn't admit that still makes me cry. >> just today, before word of his death arrived, i talked to sargent shriver's niece, caroline kennedy about his extraordinary life. >> sarg shriver is just a giant in our family. such a wonderful man, loving and devout. i think he really put his faith and his love for his wife, my aunt eunice into action every day, in the political process as well as a life of purpose and
