. >> reporter: her father was george nikita. he was the pilot of a commercial jet like this one. he was flying out of the airport bound for rhode island. in near blizzard conditions the plane vanished. nikita, his co-pilot, and three businessmen on board all from the south have never been found. they're believed to have died when the aircraft crashed into the icy lake. >> i hate that fact that these men are still down there. that there's never been any closure. >> reporter: now new hope from new york and vermont state police and other agencies. they're crisscrossing an 18 square mile quadrant looking for pieces of the plane to help solve this mystery with tools on board that weren't available in the 1970s. the search here on lake champlain will continue through the weekend with all sorts of technology from sonar to submersible robots. ultimately the goal is to see if there are any bodies intact in the wreckage and if they can be recovered. this marine exploration group is helping organize the mission empathizing with nikita's family. >> the pain they've been going through for yea
