nbc 10's george spencer has just arrived in orlando. sed to live and work there as a reporter in the city and he joins us live from the scene with an update. george? >> reporter: denise, you can see how spread out and expansive this crime scene still is. the nightclub is about a block and a half behind me where i'm standing. orange avenue is the main thorough fare through downtown orlando and the central business district about five blocks in that direction and this is a mix of commercial and residential where this mass chaos played out overnight. on the ground in orlando we are hearing some firsthand accounts. one man described the smell of ammunition as tipping him off about the deadly danger. some people apparently thought that gun fire was part of the music inside the nightclub or fireworks nearby, but this man knew better and trufrting h trusting his instincts saved his life and he rushed out of the pulse nightclub and hid in the convenience store nearby. >> he changed and put another ammunition and i could smell the ammo in the air

we begin with nbc 10's george spencer. what have you learned? >> reporter: the major told us they have now identified all the victims but have not yet been able to contact all of the victims' family members. where we are stand right now is a mile north of the pulse nightclub scene. we are about five blocks away from where families gathered. all afternoon we have been watching this growing memorial here as people prepare for tonight's individualle. new cell phone video shows the moment gunfire exchanged between omar mateen and police. the shooting claimed 50 lives and more than 50 others. we are getting a look at mateen's car taken in the parking lot of the complex where he lived. prayer beads can be seen hanging from the rear-view mirror. the back of the car is decorated with bumper stickers featuring nasa and the united states marine corps with a baby seat in the backseat. >> it appear that is the shooter was inspired by various information disseminated over the internet. >> reporter: president obama spoke to the media today after receiving a b

let's go to nbc 10's george spencer who is live near the scene. george lived and reported in orlando before coming to philadelphia. george, it's still very active out there. >> reporter: denise, at this hour we are seeing a five block lock down. coroner crews working to remove bodies from the nightclub here on orange avenue. 120 miles away from here in fort pierce, the fbi just has begun to review the apartment where this shooter allegedly lived. all evening we have been watching the names of the deceased being released by city of orlando. first four names, now up to eight names. the youngest victim just 20 years old. all of this coming as we are learning new details late tonight about both the gunman and the survivors. >> he was mentally unstable and mentally ill. that's the only explanation that i could give. >> reporter: the gunman's ex-wife spoke out tonight telling reporters that omar mateen used to beat her during their brief marriage. she says she was deeply upset to be associated with someone who would carry out such a violent act. >> i was

george spencer has more on the survivors and the doctors who helped save their lives. more heroes here, george. >> reporter: indeed, jacqueline. we know that life saving surgeries are happening even right now. eight of those full-length procedured scheduled throughout today. it comes for the first time we are hearing how the medical heroes were able to save so many lives, even as this memorial here in downtown orlando continues to grow. and as this city prepares for at least five different vigils tonight. >> all i could hear was the shotgun, one after another, and people screaming and yelling for help. >> reporter: angel had to rely on what he could hear sunday morning. he had been hit three times in the leg and couldn't move. he laid on the bloody floor of pulse nightclub, playing dead, as shooter omar mateen returned for a second round of killing. >> i had no reaction, i was just prepared to stay there, laying down, so he won't know i'm alive. >> reporter: from the attack scene to orlando's largest trauma unit. >> that was great for the patients, them being close. but

let's begin with nbc 10's george spencer who joins us live from orlando. george, if you can, give us a sense of what is taking place there right now. >> reporter: jaqueline, really just ground swell, an outpour of community and support only about a mile away from the attack scene. this memorial and stage will soon house a city-run vigil just about an hour from now. it comes as orlando police now confirm they have notified the family of all victims except one as we are getting a firsthand look at the horror that started it all. a snapchat video captured the very instant a gunman opened fire on the crowd inside the pulse nightclub in orlando. you can see the confusion on the face of the woman who took the video. a woman who tragically did not make it out of the club alive. another video shot just hours later shows how the rampage ended in a hail of gunfire as a police s.w.a.t. team stormed the nightclub and shot and killed gunman omar mateen. and news still photos today show mateen's toyota camry parked at the complex where he lived. prayer beads hang from th

george spencer found somehow he remained free until he allegedly shot officer dorman last week. >> reporter: are you sorry for what you did? >> walking in hand calms dante eiland no longer a wanted man. a judge issued a warrant for his arrest nine months ago and the u.s. marshal's service never captured him and court papers showed they had his home address which was only steps from where the shooting occurred. delaware county district attorney jack weighland says prioritizing which wanted criminal to search for first is generally a judgment call. >> it's usually up to the discretion of the individual, probation, parole department and their supervisors. >> state court records show a series of drug dealing and possession arrests starting in 2001 and then in 2005 a judge sentenced him to nine years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon followed by three years of supervised release, and that is where more problems began. late last june eiland told his probation officer he would be moving from this usher darby home to where the shooting occurred and he ceased reporting as instructed b

. >> george spencer joins us now with their story. he's live in orlando for us. george? >> reporter: keith, much of this city's medical response centered on just a single hospital. 44 different victims brought to that one hospital in a span of just hours. and today, we heard from one of those survivors who applauded their really unscripted team work and recalled an orlando police officer who may have saved his life. >> i can't remember his face or name, but i'm grateful for him. he looked at me and made sure i'm alive. he grabbed my hand and said this is the only way i can take you out. >> in a way, he was one of the lucky ones. by the time s.w.a.t. teams stormed the pulse nightclub, he had been shot in the leg three times but was still alive. that mystery officer dragged him out, past other bodies, scraping across piles of shattered glass, and dropped him safe in a parking lot across the street. >> i look over and there's bodies everywhere. >> reporter: in a stroke of tremendous good fortune, that parking lot and the nightclub are less than half a mile, just six blocks

. >>> nbc10's george spencer is also in orlando tracking the latest developments in this investigation. he's speaking with survivors, family and friends of the victims. you can watch for his live reports later today on nbc10 news beginning at 4:00. >> this morning, police in philadelphia are searching for the driver in a deadly hit-and-run in the northeast part of the city. police say a woman was crossing the street when a car hit her late last night along the roosevelt boulevard and adams avenue in crescentville. the impact sent the victim flying 200 feet, according to investigators, which is more than half the length of a football field. police are looking for a white or silver older model minivan with extensive front end damage. >> the driver of that vehicle struck someone and killed them and left the scene. so they have to turn themselves in because they are going to get caught. >> police say the victim is in her early 20s, but they don't know who she is because she wasn't carrying i.d. they will hold a news conference this afternoon at 1:00 to update us on their investigation. >>>

today a prince george's county firefighter was given a special honor in annapolis. darcy spencer was there. >> reporter: the widow and young daughter of fallen prince olmschneider unveil his name. >> he worked with me for several years. we were great friends at work as well as off work. >> reporter: it was a solemn ceremony at the maryland emergency services memorial park where those who have died in the line of duty are honored. >> remember every call could be our last. so pay attention to faith, family, and friends. >> reporter: they were shot in april when they forced entry into a home. that homeowner opened fire telling police he thought they were intruders. >> it is an unfortunate. it is a reflection of a national trend of all emergency workers, whether it be fire, ems, or police officers who do not know what they're responding to anymore and the ensuing violence that can occur at time. at this point, prince george's fire says the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. we are live tonight in laurel, darcy spencer, news 4. >> thank you, darcy. new details tonight on a horrifying case of road rage. police are pursuing charges daughter. they say they were attacked because of their religion. this could be a hate crime. this 17-year-old believes she and her mother are the victims of a hate crime targeted because they are muslim. we are only showing her hands because she is afraid. >> i never expected it to happen. >> she told the story to our darcy spencer. it started at a red light at father hurley boulevard two weeks ago. >> the light turned green and the driver in front of us didn't really know. my mom honked. we moved to the different lane. she pointed her middle finger. >> reporter: they were both wearing hijabs, islamic head scarves. the confrontation resulted in these pictures. the woman doused her with oil and her mom's car. >> she had au hand. some type of oil. >> reporter: she tells us the woman screamed anti-muslim slurs, told them to go back to their own country and drove away. >> we wa

spencer live at the new carrollton station with details. >> reporter: just within the last several minutes, prince george's county police have shown up here at the new carrollton station handing out fliers like this one with a photo of the man they're looking for in connection with the sexual assault. one woman told me today this attack has many riders unnerved. what was your reaction when you heard this? >> just as i'm feeling right now, scared. really scared. >> reporter: some riders are worried and taking precautions after a woman was followed from a metro station and sexually assaulted. >> i'm really more vigilant right now. >> reporter: the alleged at of your screen in a metro tunnel wearing a red jacket. police say he walks with a limp. he's wanted in connection in the sexual assault of a woman. >> i hope he gets caught. >> reporter: surveillance photos show the man was wearing the jacket with a distinctive red cross on the back. he followed the victim from the metro to an office building just off metro property on garden center drive on thursday. >> just the very thought that somebody was already attacked or followed from this stat
