our host of "this week," george stephanopoulos, joins us this morning. good to see you, george. did santorum's victory in louisiana change the dynamics? >> not really. but it does reinforce what we have seen. rick santorum is very strong in the south. seventh win in the south. it's his 11th win overall. romney has broad support across the country. romney is more than halfway to where he needs to get the delegates. he's the only candidate in the race to get enough delegates to win the nomination. but rick santorum didn't do anything to unseat mitt romney from his commanding position. >> but things are getting really ugly within the party. all of this republican infighting, does this hurt the party in the long way? >> that's the big picture. lot of big voices in the party came out, they said that it's time to unify, time to wrap this up. jeb bush, the former florida governor came out and endorsed mitt romney this weekend. but you saw rick santorum last night. he's in no mood to do this. newt gingrich didn't get any delegates yesterday. he'll get a lot of pressure to get out. >> ge

we want to turn to jon karl filling in for george stephanopoulos on "this week." he's joining us from washington. jon, good to see you. i want to start with puerto rico. mitt romney has the support there with the backing of the governor. does that guarantee him a win for him? >> romney has a great string of victories, bianna, in these island territories, like guam, american samoa, the british virgin islands, he'll probably continue that streak, all of these places that can't vote in the general election, but they do have a few delegates and romney at this point is going after every single delegate that he can get. >> but as we mentioned, all eyes are on tuesday's illinois primary. romney actually cut his trip short to puerto rico to campaign there. how important is that race and who's likely to come out of the victor? >> santorum has had a string of victories in the midwest. so, he's looking to continue that streak. this is clearly a romney state, this is a state where in any polls that we have seen, romney has a lead. but it's a state that santorum is looking to

bian bianna. >> just two days away. >>> let's bring in george stephanopoulos for more insight. can you explain the santorum delegate issue? in ohio, how big of a blow is this for him? >> it's a pretty big blow. he didn't file enough slates in the state. no matter what, he's ineligible for 18 of the 71 delegates. even if he wins, as long as romney is close, he'll get the delegates in the state of ohio. the way this is set up, santorum is not on the ballot in virginia. if romney wins his home state, virginia, idaho, vermont, he'll win the most delegates on tuesday. no matter what. he's already has twice as many as santorum. this will put him in a place where it's almost impossible for the others to catch up. >> you mentioned the others. you have newt gingrich on the show this morning, he said his focus was going to be on super tuesday, if he doesn't do well is this the end of his candidacy? >> he has to win georgia. he'll have a hard time convincing republican voters going forward that he's anything but a regional candidate. he's only won in south carolina. last state contest he'

i want to bring in george stephanopoulos right now. so, is mitt romney is nominee?> almost certainly, i think. look at what we know right now. mitt romney will win the most states tonight. he will win the most delegates. at the end of the night, he will be the only candidate to win enough delegates to get it locked up before the conventions. he can secure the claim to the nomination, only if he does beat rick santorum in the big battleground state of ohio. that's what everybody is watching tonight. >> you and i have been going over the exit polling. you say there's a vulnerability here. >> we can see the challenge. tonight in ohio, voters will go to the polls. they believe that mitt romney is the most electable. 53% think he has the best ability to beat president obama. but when you ask who understands the problems of average americans, look at that. only 23% say mitt romney. he's got a real connection problem here. not dissimilar to what barack obama had four years ago. >> can he close in on the problems of average americans? it's embedded in the polls. george and

i'm diane sawyer, with george stephanopoulos.nd super tuesday is going into overtime here, as we watch what's going to happen. ten states are voting, as you know. and at stake, 437 delegates. and right now, all eyes on ohio, because mitt romney, in the exit polling, has been showing to pull ahead an electability. but rick santorum pulls ahead on understanding the problems of the average americans. >> this will be the decisive ballot of the night. it's way too close to call. mitt romney is going to win the most delegates tonight. he's won three states. virginia, vermont, his home state of massachusetts. everybody has won something tonight. everybody stays in. no one is dropping out of this race at all. mitt romney will pick up more delegates than inelse. he's the only candidate who can mathematically get the amount of delegates he needs. but if he loses ohio tonight, it will be a sign of his weakness in the general election campaign. rick santorum will keep fighting hard. >> the story changes, anything
