so now we come to george washington. earlier, hissaid whole point of coming to america was to make his origin dating washington. the history of the paintings of washington are complicated. he came to philadelphia and had the letter of introduction from john jay. surprisingly enough, washington was willing -- i think he invited him that very evening and he was going to set the next morning. so the first portrait that stuart did of washington is called the lawn portrait. it was commissioned by someone named vaugn. stuart to the portrait and immediately had 33 patrons who wanted copies of that portrait. so he made maybe 12 or 13 copies and then he got tired of doing that. augnat time, and we have a portrait downstairs, but not on view. for a while it was thought that ours might be the original, but it is probably a very early copy, because stuart, late in his writings, wrote that he had rubbed that went out, because in the midst of making replicas of portrait he got another commission from martha washington for a portrait wh

everybody knows george washington. everybody admires george washington. everybody wants a portrait. everybody wants to paint george washington if you're a painter. if it's a painting or an engraving from a painting or maybe it's a vase that you bought from france with george washington's image on it or a society of the cincinnati plate considering george washington to be the modern-day -- or maybe it's a clock with george washington on it imported from france. everyone wants something with george washington on it. this portrait we're looking at right here is the galleries of von sinclair george washington. it was cleaned by a grant the gallery has from the bank of america to conserve paintings by gilbert stuart. i think we're working our way through them, but this was one of the first ones that was done. it's a replica of the van image. this one was requested by a man named van and then also owned by someone named sinclair, so that's why it's called the van sinclair image of washington. this is a replica of the very first image of washington that stuart did. you can see the red drap

if george washington says it is good, we will agree. but there were people who are passionately opposed, james monroe, patrick henry, give me liberty or give me death. that man opposed the constitution and was bitter about it. massachusetts got it through, but the other big state was new york. it was one of the most important states. alexander hamilton not from any state, he realized that people better stop being provincial and get together and understand that we all need each other. he very much identified with new york and he married a new yorker and he was the principal organizer of the federalist papers and in the federalist papers they spelled out all the reasons why new yorkers should vote for this thing and make it true that there would be a united states, not simply "these" united states. the word they used, it is in my research, it is also their -- there, hamilton says that we need in on fire. an umpire would decide between the states. and madison said what better umpires than those in congress. hamilton is on the far right, c

"the washington post" reporting that the budget bargain faces its first test today with house republicans, speaker boehner and president obama having reached that agreement this week, not a done deal. a two-year budget negotiated by the white house and congressional leaders, and today house republicans meeting to decide if they can support that deal or not. several coming out already making statements saying that they cannot support the deal. the deal would increase spending and boost the debt ceiling through march of 2017 in exchange for spending reforms, increasing federal spending by $80 billion. and having been reached behi
