washington spent a great deal of time. found within and behind a drawer were two letters from george to martha washington. this is significant because as i noted, martha burned all their correspondence following george's death. so did she save these letters because of their content or were they inadvertently omitted from the flames? unfortunately, we do not know but one of those letters remains in our collection at tutor place while the second is now back at mount vernon. these are the only two letters that survive from george to martha washington with the exception of a short note discovered since they were found. the tutor place letter is especially significant dating to june of 1775 because it is the one in which washington writes to them either from philadelphia informing her he has been given command of the continental army. it is unknown when the peter family discovered the letters and the writing table but it didn't occur until because 1828 martha recounted the story of its discovery to jared sparks, the historian visiting tutor place to compile material. aside from these specific bequests, like the

george washington was a really smart guy. so often i have noticed, the bad weather just goes right around us. beware of tornadoes -- never in washington. people ask me sometimes how the works are made, and i've got a few slides here which will give some demonstration of that. this is an aerial view of lafayette square, with the white house. this was done for the white house historical association. i really wanted to do it the other way around, because there is lots of images from the washington monument, but there is no images from this way. so this was constructed out of whole cloth, from numerous sources. this is how i starts -- i paid , andanvas a kind of brown in this case, i laid a map of washington out on it in shock -- out on it in chalk and then developed where the buildings were going to go. i started building from scratch. you can see my entries during construction. the basic colors are put in pretty roughly. you can see over on the right-hand side, the ground still shows. the color starts coming in, the buildings ta

number one, after reading about and studying and writing a book on george washington, mr. brookhiser saw there is someone -- a right-hand aid and man in his life, and wrote a tremendous book in 1999. the book is only 220 pages long. that deserves an award. if you can tell alexander hamilton's life and all the dimensions of it in 220 pages, it is magnificent. the other thing we really appreciate about mr. brookhiser, it really gets the true hamilton. and going to the primary sources, it has been really helpful to the cause of looking for people to learn about the accurate characterization of alexander hamilton where many of us didn't hear about him until a couple of years ago because of the mischaracterization. we thank him for that book. really was quite the accomplishment. number two, mr. brookhiser was a historian curator for alexander hamilton, the man who made modern america, which was displayed at the new york historical society in 2004. how many were able to see that? good. he worked with jim basker and nicole siri and then there were alexander hamilton exhibit panel
