my name is roy richard grinker and i am a professor of anthropology at george washington university. i am going to speak for ten minutes after which seth mnookin will speak for ten minute and then we will have a dialogue with each other before opening it up to the audience. many of you have probably not heard an apologist speak about autism and that is not surprising since most of the are in the field of counseling, psychology, speech therapy and so on but i have a daughter with autism and she was diagnosed in 1994. at that time there was an emerging feeling there was an epidemic of autism. there was an emerging sense in the united states and other countries that there was a dramatic rise and people said i feel it in my gut that there are more kids with autism now than ever before. one of the strategies anthropologist's often use to look at their own world is to go away. go to other countries and learn about those other countries. not just in and of themselves but to come back and see your own society in a new light and to try to figure out what was happening with my daughter and wha

anthropologist richard grinker, a professor at george washington university, says it's because we have widened the definition of autism. >> it's where somebody who previously had the identical symptoms now is conceptualized differently. and so if you went back 30, 0, years and you looked at people who were diagnosed with mental retardation or who were diagnosed with what was then called childhood schizophrenia, you would find that those people, 30 years ago, would qualify for the diagnosis of autism today. and i suspect that we may see the prevalence of autism continue to increase not because there are more cases. they were there all along. perhaps. but because we're getting better at locating them, finding them, and delivering services to these children and adults who really need help. >> reporter: but a majority of the researchers we talked to believe that wider diagnosis explains only part of the increase in autism numbers. the rest remains the object of much scientific speculation. among others, dr. irva hertz- picciotto who heads the division of environmental and occupational heal

obama unveiled his plan for long-term deficit reduction today in a 43-minute address at george washington university offered a plan that would cut the deficit by $4 trillion in the next 12 years. >> so today i'm proposing a more balanced approach to achieve $4 trilion in deficit reduction over 12 years. it's an approach that borrows from the recommendations of the bipartisan fiscal commission that i appointed last year and it builds on the roughly $1 trillion in deficit reduction i already proposed in my 2012 budget. it's an aroach that puts every kind of spending on the table, but one that protects the middle class, our promise to seniors, and our investments this the future. >> rose: the president recommended more cuts to domestic and military spending but steered clear of fundamental changes to med character medicaid, and social security. he reiterated his support for an overhaul of the tax code and he called for an end to the bush tax cuts for the wealthy. >> in december i agreed to extend the tax cuts for the wealthiest americans because it was the only way i could prevent a tax hike on middle
