we know about the impact of trayvon martin shooting in 2012, and the acquittal of george zimmerman, a man who shot him. we know about, certainly, and i don't need to rehearse all of the examples of police shootings, whether we think about philando castile in minneapolis or michael ferguson, michael brown in ferguson, missouri, the images black lives matter certainly part of the narrative of the last 20 years, and also the spread of campus activism that was spawned in part in response to black lives matter. and then of course if you move quickly into the present time, the divisive nature of the political election, this season in the fall of 2016, the election of donald trump and the reality that we are all experiencing right now. i'll comment about that later, but let me just say that that's a lot of stuff in the last 20 years. and what really crystallized for me the complexity of this question, is it better and the generational nature of the, was reflecting on whether, what would a 20-year-old say in response to that question? so let's imagine that for a moment. let's imagine you're b
