it's my privilege to welcome you to georgetown law and to our conference, the color surveillance. after the event of ferguson missouri and after the creation of the black lives matter movement, our society has begun a re-examination of policing in african-american communities. as this all started, i reached out to prof. paul butler and we agreed that we as a law school should undertake deep exploration of the issues at stake. criminal justice reform, civil rights, and i would contend, surveillance policy. in the past year and a half, we have had a series of important conversations at the law school that have focused on policing in african-american communities. last year, in the the wake of michael brown's death, professor butler and other members of the faculty held a public form here that was called the conversation about ferguson. then in the wake of freddie grey's death in baltimore, in may of last year, we held another symposium next door. this fall, the georgetown law journal had the goals of identifying and analyzing the underlying causes and potential solutions to racialize
