over one year later, i am proud to say that the georgetown community has deeply engaged with georgetown'selation to the institution of slavery from a variety of different perspectives. from dorm room discussions and personal introspective to creating thoughtful theater performances, students across campus have engaged with the deeper questions on our proper role as members of the georgetown community. but today, we remember to of the early members in the story of this hilltop. today, we are here to permanently dedicate isaac hawking's hall and anne marie becraft hall. today, we react t re-acknowledge that torch down that georgetown university, an institution which anchors a district that was founded to uphold an unprecedented conception of liberty and self-governance was built with the force labor of human beings that were simply referred to as hands. i hope that as we continue to remember the bravery and perseverance of anne marie , isaac hawkins, and those who have come after them that we can come closer to grasping a true understanding of their distrust relationship with freedom. the e

i credited all of this to the fact that they've gone to georgetown. i thought that if i got in, i would be able to access some of the rat pack energy. this top 10 in my class in my top 1090 number 1176 and not short on confidence. who wouldn't want me? i got all of my rejections on the same day in april. after returning from her second pilgrimage to georgetown grade body cars took her because i was so convinced i was going to get in, we got home to realize the cashier forgot to put the sticker in the back. later, when my dad got the mail and i'll been made very thin letter from georgetown and all of the others, we realized it was a sign. things like this only work in retrospect. i ended up choosing between the university of vermont in the university of wisconsin coming from such a small town, i worried i would be to fish out of water he and madison so happily and proudly stand up and the freshman class of 1994. when i sent in the forms to register for housing in the plane and all the stuff that makes you feel like you're in your life is about to start

he had it extensively restored in the 1970's and could be seen driving it around georgetown. we have a great photo from our archive showing armistead peter iii sitting at the wheel of the car. so the garage was built in 1913, 1914. but the part of the garage we are standing in was added in 1968. the most interesting part is what is beneath our feet, the bomb shelter. we are going to go into that now. we are now under that 1968 garage addition and walking into what was the bomb shelter. armistead peter iii, the last owner of tudor place was a , veteran of the first world war serving in the naval reserves and the second world war in the pacific. he was in the pacific at the time of the atomic bomb so by the 1960's, some of the cold war things, you can see why he would want to have a bomb shelter. he realized he was only a couple of miles from a number of buildings that were likely target so he wanted to have a shoulder that would protect from bomb blasts and nuclear fallout, radioactive particles in the air. it is a fascinating space. it was originally constructed to hold 12 pe
