i was laid off from georgia tech a month ago because georgia tech's budget was cut and where georgia tech has a huge commitment, getting to rural areas and solve technology problems. it was not economically feasible but universities, particularly public universities like georgia tech and the land grant universities that have not reached as a mission have a public service commitment to solve these problems and personally i think there's an opportunity for collaboration not only with telecommunications and local leaders but technology companies and universities to get together and really create a learning environment, create community classrooms and laboratories where learning about this technology and gaining competitive advantage from it. maybe a bit of a free-market cure but i believe if we gain that knowledge we will create demand and that will pull the technology into rural areas more efficiently than just pushing it and taking this building and they will come strategy. my comments for this morning. look forward to your questions. >> thank you. you really set the stage with some go

i am the creator and the director of the georgia tech spring lab, which is a research group that is devoted to researching and understanding what kinds of control we can have from brain signals alone. we were one of the very first labs to control a wheelchair with brain signals and we've used a variety of different mechanisms so that we might have boxes flashing at different speeds and we can tell by brain signal processing that if you're watching this box flashing at ten times a second or this one at 15 times a second, all you have to do is pay attention to the one you want. document to turn right? you pay attention to the one on the right and we can see which one you're looking at by the osing lagzs in the brain. you're looking at the one that's flashing ten times a second and we can turn a wheelchair. our most recent wheelchair, one of my master students, michael boys, who is a wheelchair user himself reserve engineered his own wheelchair to be driven by the visual inter face. and he actually drove it around the building quite a bit. so that was exciting. we give people control without h
