new book out about gerald ford from richard norton smith. i went to the ford library last week and i was lucky enough to go there and see the exhibits and hear an excellent presentation. when i read your book, really ford, political culture is not kind to gerald ford, tell us about that. >> there are two things going on. what is he had some well- publicized stumbles where he fell. they were really his fault. he was trying to help betty on a slippery floor. regardless, the stumbles led to the impression of him as a klutz. gerald ford was probably the best athletes already present. he was an expert here in tennis player and he was drafted into the nfl. he did not play but he was drafted. ford was a tremendous athlete but there was perception of him as a klutz for people who know his history. that is one aspect and second is that the culture was changing at the time. that's what i'm trying to get into the book. the culture is changing and that 10 or 15 years before you could not make fun of the president on tv. with an attempt to do a skit show
