and that was gerald ford.when steven ford began speaking, reading the eulogy that his father, gerald ford, had written. i think all of us sat here and got chills. >> it was beautiful. steve ford said that they respected each other as adversaries, but cherished each other as friends. and i thought that was beautiful, that, you know, these are two men who didn't, on paper, have much in common. they grew close. they helped each other in the post-presidency, raised money for each other's libraries. gerald ford did some some work for the carter center. um, jimmy carter did some work for the ford library. and to me, it really makes the point that, as dwight eisenhower said, the country is far more important than any one of us. and i think that these former presidents, we saw that today. it was a rare moment where we see them coming together. and i think you can look at every single one of these men and make and make these comparisons. i mean, bush and obama, for instance, after bin laden was killed during the obama

it did, but it's interesting that you mention about being in front of the statue of gerald ford. think about this. this is the ultimate bipartisan nod. he was clearly a partisan person, a person of the left. the left was thriving. after his presidency, it wrong in the era of ronald reagan and a much different look at what the country should do in the minds of american voters. it's much like the turning of the page that's happening now. and american voters made a decision in november and we are seeing that ideology shift and we will see how it plays out in the trump administration part 2. >> so many of our memories of the late president are with his wife rosa lydon, noting that they were 77 years. there were some interesting notes about how they met. he was the first president born in a hospital. he's first saw his wife when she was an infant in 1927 jimmy's mother was a nerve and took care of her mother. the nurse then brought jimmy as a 3-year-old to see little rosa lynn. they knew each other basically their entire lives as we do see the family making their way up the steps and

, he made a point of mending his relationship with gerald ford and brought him to the white house in several locations and after the presidency, even though ford was playing golf and not really doing the same kind of things on certain discrete projects they joined together and established this personal bond which carter didn't have with his other successors and he got along better with ford than he did with bill clinton and even barack obama. the each to promise -- promised one another that the one that would survive each would speak at the funeral and when gerald ford died, jimmy carter did the eulogy and now steve ford is returning the favor but to the pomp and circumstance point, i think he didn't want hail to the chief played and he later admitted to me that that wasn't so smart of him because he was kind of reducing the stature of the office but that was his natural inclination to be more modest in pretty much every dimension of his life but he also light to being recognized and appreciated. i think it was a good thing he lived long enough to see people reappraise him and his pr

now, reagan ultimately lost that primary to gerald ford and then gerald ford went onto lose the presidentialace to jimmy carter. but the prez panama canal issue did not go away, neither did ronald reagan. the task of finalizing the agreement fell in president carter's lap. and reagan laid the foundation for his next presidential run by challenging president carter at every step. reagan gave public speeches, and he testified before congress. he even held a public debate with fellow conservative william f. buckley over the merits of keeping the panama canal. but in 1977 president carter signed the treaty, and that handed over control of the panama canal. >> we are here to participate in the signing of treaties which will ensure a peaceful and prosperous and secure future for an international waterway of great importance to us all. but the treaties do more than that. they mark the commitment of the united states to it the belief that fairness and not force should lie at the heart of our dealings with the nations of the world. >> fairness, not force. it was a powerful statement by president cart

in 1976, former governor jimmy carter won 297 electoral votes, defeating the incumbent president geraldd. carter was sworn in to become the 39th president. in his inauguration speech, he talked about his hopes for america and urged for democracy in other nations.
