police say the 38-year-old suspect, gerald ram olympics is h -- ramos is his name, now being held without bail. police said they found evidence in his home that he had planned this attack in great detail. he had a newly purchased shotgun and smoke grenades and he barricaded at least one exit before he started shooting. he had filed a defamation claim back in 2012. the paper had covered a a harassment case against him the previous year. the police just held a news conference. what new details did we learn? >> reporter: we learned quite a few details. we know at this hour this shooter is still not cooperating with investigators. he hasn't been cooperating since he was taken into custody, so much so that in order to identify who he was, they had to use facial recognition technology. maryland used a photo of this man that they had in a database, and they were able to i.d. him that way. we also, as you mentioned, john, know that they were able to locate his vehicle nearby. they also searched his home. and they said based on what they found inside his home, it is clear that this attack was plan

gerald ramos was just held without bail before a hearing -- gerald ramos was just held without bail afterwith a district court judge trial. mr. ramos was arrested last night. i would like to detail just for a minute and thank first the members of the anne arundel police department, sheriff's department, annapolis police, all law enforcement involved in this investigation. my office was brought on scene yesterday afternoon at approximately 3:00. myself, the prosecutors behind me spent the afternoon and day working with our police officers reviewing evidence and understanding the scene as it occurred and unfolded. as of last night, mr. ramos was charged, brought before a commissioner. he was held without bail. the rules require that he be brought before a district court judge immediately thereafter. he was brought before judge pyle today. as you heard in the courtroom, mr. ramos is alleged to have executed a brutal series of attacks on innocent victims. most importantly, my responsibility today was to inform the court as to why mr. ramos was either a flight risk or a danger to our community

>> reporter: well, jeff, our cbs law enforcement sources identify the suspect as gerald ramos of laurel, maryland. he's 38 years old, an according to court documents appeared to have a grievance in the past against the "capital gazette" newspaper. the suspect is in custody, but as investigators have pressed him for information, he has not been cooperating. we also learned that he tried to hide his identity from investigators, because he did not have an i.d. on him when he was taken into custody. and sources say that he had damaged his fingertips so that law enforcement couldn't use fingerprints to identify him. but investigators have been able to identify him by using other law enforcement tools. they also are looking into whether he has a criminal record. tonight police say that there were threats made against the newspaper on social media today and that investigators were trying to determine if the man in custody made those threats. police are interviewing over 100 people, trying to find answers e many of these questions. jeff? >> glor: jeff pegues, thank you very much from our d.c. n
