i think the first time that i ever saw geraldine or heard geraldine, when she was announcing that she's going to be running for vice president. so all these things that -- from last week when we were notified that geraldine had passed away, many of us wanted to go back to new york for the funeral. unfortunately our business here kept us here so we couldn't go back. we're kind of used to that. you know, a lot of times it's said you can spend a lifetime here in congress but two minutes after you die they will say, who's that, but that's not geraldine. geraldine was someone that was a force. you know, again, i say in 1984, like most americans, i took notice of geraldine ferraro when she did accept the democratic nomination for vice president at the national convention in san francisco. she stuck to me as the unique figure on tv, a woman in a male dominated profession. she had a smile, she had confidence. you know, when she got onto that stage you just knew this radiance that came out of her. for myself i was not in politics, didn't follow politics too well, but she certainly gave a strong

and that's the historic vice presidential nomination of geraldine ferraro in 1984. and one of my favorite sort of groups of sources in the book that i used, i made a trip to the manhattan college with are the geraldine ferraro archive was, and ferraro was an alum of mary mount manhattan. ask there are all kinds of let -- and there are all kinds of letters from women in all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries about the importance of that campaign to them and the women. and before i just read a sampling from a couple of those letters, just a little, i guess, back to the past just to reset, reset your mindset in 1984 for a second. so when i'm setting the scene, i said that "newsweek" ran a 25-page special -- this is when in the 1984 as soon as mondale announced that geraldine ferraro would be sharing the ticket with him. and i say "newsweek" ran a 25-page special report documenting all aspects of how mondale popped the question to the frosted blond. [laughter] to be fair, the hokey references to the candidate's sex and the gender apg anxietity didn't begin and en

[laughter] now as opposed to that some of the reporters said years later that they thought it was a preconceived comment that it was planned that mrs. bush was too much of a political professional to say something like that to reporters and not understand the application. they thought she meant to get into a jab but then something to retreat into so that was a comment but it follows her to this day. >> how was she as a mother and not especially to laura bush? >> she has tried to have cordial relations with all of her children i have been told from time to time that to the two of them have a respectful but someone distance relationship i cannot attest to that myself. there is a story and i do not know if it is true or not to that when laura bush was first brought up to kennebunkport to meet the extended family, she met to george's grandmother, dorothy bush the first president bush mother and she said to her what do you do? what is your story? and supposedly laura bush responded i read

and he had a debate with geraldine ferraro, the democratic nominee for vice president. and in the debate, ferraro said that he didn't -- he had no idea what normal people were going through because his wealth insulated him from normal life if you will. so mr. bush was on the campaign airplane the next day, and she was talking to reporters. and she was, obviously, really unhappy about that comment, and she said, well, you know, geraldine ferraro and her husband -- they probably have more money than george bush. they could probably buy and sell george bush, and then she said, and i can't say what that woman is but it rhymes with witch. no, i'm sorry. i can't say what that woman is but it rhymes with rich, okay? so the reporters sort of looked at each other and i'm sure ran for the telephones. by time they landed, the comment was all over. and it happened to be halloween. [laughter] >> so the reporters said to her when she landed at her next stop, did you mean, you know, that it rhymes with rich that -- and she said, i would never say that geraldine ferraro is a witch. i keep going back to geraldine ferrarro who we lost recently, when walter mondale put her on the ticket he thought women would flock the ticket. ronald reagan won women that year. a so it's got to be about a change in tone and attitude towards this population. >> it's got to be the republicans really have to get their act together and put in an effort to speaking to the hispanic population in the united states if they're going to have any hope of reaching them and getting their votes. and that is they talk to them about similar values, self- reliance, independence from the government. in other words, not being dependent on the government. they're very socially conservative. in california when the gay apparently proposition came up last time the two blocs that defeated that proposition were african-americans and hispanics. so the republicans do have the momentum behind them in terms of ideology, philosophy and values, but they need to be able to make their case and they haven't done it quite so far. marco rubio is a great spokesman for it. >> in california exactly right, hispanics voted

geraldine ferraro is survived by her husband, three children and eight grandchildren. i must say that i was disappointed that in the house we didn't have a plane to take all the members to the funeral yesterday. i'm sorry about that because frankly i think it was a bit disrespectful. but we all remember gerry ferraro. we remember her as a true new yorker. we remember her as a true american. and we remember her as someone who each of us, she inspired to push on with whatever goal we want to achieve no matter how daunting or impossible it looked. that's how i'll remember gerry ferraro. i'll remember her at the 1984 convention standing on the stage with walter mondale, both putting their arms around them and there was a question they would interact because it was the first time a woman was on the ticket. i'll miss my friend, gerry. we will all miss her but we are all better people because of her. rest in peace, gerry. we will always remember you and so will the history books. i yield back, mr. speaker. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman yields back. under the speaker'
