joining me now are david gergen and james carville. thank you both for being with me., let me start with you. do you think they've kind of painted themselves, the leadership into these corners, that they're having a tough time coming out from? >> i do. i think that the republicans have painted themselves in a corner some time ago by refusing to do anything on taxes, raise taxes at all. the democrats have pointed themselves in a corner not taking a deal that doesn't raise taxes. the president did it by saying he won't take an interim deal. i want a big deal. i think there's a good chance they're going to have a train wreck. i am in favor of what simpson-bowles came out with, which is a plan that had $2 of spending cuts for every 1 there are increase. it could have gotten bipartisan support. we are what we are now. the parties are stuck. i do not think they can get the big mega deal the president is talking about. i think they are going to have a hard time getting a mid sized deal. i think they can come up with a short term, interim package in which it requires some comp

senior political analyst david gergen is with us as well, on the phone democratic straejt paul vegala. paul, what do you make of what happened in this meeting and signs of potential progress? >> what we thought was no drama obama sounds like a pretty dramatic meeting. i do think the only way you can get to a deal is if both sides want to deal. and the only way you get that is if the republicans believe that president would walk away if they don't meet him halfway or at least part of the way. it does seem to me untenable for one side to say, well, we'll even put social security on the table which apparently what the president has done and the other side says we won't put a nickel of revenue even from corporate loopholes on the table. it does seem like it's a pretty unfair negotiating strategy for the republicans, and it looks like maybe it's blown up in their face. >> david gergen, your take on this and especially on this day where moody's is talking about reviewing a potential downgrade of our credit rating. >> anderson, i think the fact that meeting broke up in the way it did is extr

. >> david gergen, your take on this and especially on this day where moody's is talking about reviewing a potential downgrade of our credit rating. >> anderson, i think the fact that meeting broke up in the way it did is extremely unfortunate, not only for trying to solve the debt ceiling but trying to solve the underlying problem of the mounting debts, the debt crisis that we're approaching. and i don't want to apportion blame here. i don't agree with paul's analysis but i don't want to get into the blame sort of situation. what it does seem to me is this, that the president and the leaders all have to come out of their corners and arrive at some sort of deal in the immediate future that averts a default on the national debt. that's the single most important thing. and whatever that deal is, the president says he does not want a short-term deal. i know personally that he feels very intensely about that. but his own top economic advisor, larry summers, wrote today in the financial times, he's got to get any deal is better than no deal. we have to get past the default crisis, and then we

joining us is political analyst gloria borger and david gergen. say it passes in the house and it goes to the senate. what are harry reid's options there? >> they're trying to figure that out right now. look, it's not going to pass the senate. but john boehner then has another decision to make quashed this revolt on the right. but if this measure goes to the senate and it doesn't pass, then there's another question if they go the legislative route this way. there's another question which is, can he possibly compromise and bring his troops along with him, or is he going to have to compromise and understand that in order to get something through the house he's now going to have to start looking for democratic votes? because once you start compromising with harry reid, you may just lose a lot of those tea party republicans and you're going to have to get some democrats in line to vote for this. so the whole dynamic really changes, anderson, once this passes the house tomorrow if it does as expected. >> and you're getting late details from your source

now perspective from david gergen, advised four u.s. presidents. david, i'm going to go back to the report t is almost impossible to find anything encouraging in this report. if you look at it you see employment down in government, down in education, down in financial services, down in construction, down in manufacturing. if you look deeper in this report, david gergen, you see temporary workers being laid off, wages flat lineded. advising this president, what do you do now? >> well, john that is very tough and politically it is very tough. you know, this was an administration that promised a stimulus bill that could hold unemployment below 8%. we have had 29 months, a modern record of unemployment being above 8%. this is rare. we haven't seen this kind of thing since the great depression. it is not just a question of getting the numbers coming back, he has to got to build confidence in his leadership and that people have a sense he can get things done and knows where he is going, psych logical as much as about numbers. franklin roosevelt could win

you're staying with us along with the chief political analyst, david gergen, jessica yellin. i'll start. but it seem to me having heard both those speeches, the economic equivalent of the bay of pigs. who will blink first? >> that's right. the president doesn't have a say because he doesn't have a vote. for the president, it was a moment the try to ice 38th republican speaker the house and urge him to try to change paths and find a route to compromise. we did hear him hug speaker boehner rather tight and say did he try work with the president. i'm not sure that was the best way to help john bainer to get more votes to compromise with his hard line members. i would point out to you, the president did not in this speech repeat his veto threat. we have heard him repeatedly say he would veto a short term extension of the debt ceiling. he did not do that tonight. i don't know what we should read into that. i'll find out. in essence, the president trying to use the bully that you will fo, the bully pulpit to rally the american people. >> this is pretty unprecedented. no u.s. presid

we will be speaking with senior political analyst david gergen. >>> i'm ali velshi.s showing the wealth gap is growing even wider on this "american morning." ♪ ♪ >>> it is tuesday, july 6th. the headlines -- no deal. the clock ticks toward the debt ceiling. >> as it gets closer and closer a lot more frayed nerves and questions about our future economic health. the debt crisis is looming. the president and house speaker john boehner try to take their cases directly to the nation last night. first, it was the president. he gave a prime time speech as the nation is now a week away from this august 2nd deadline. the president made it clear he will refuse to accept a short-term solution because he argues that republicans will use it to keep playing games. in the meantime, speaker boehner responded saying he is giving it all but the president who wants to keep on spending. >> we know what we have to do to reduce our deficits. there is no point in putting the economy at risk by kicking the can further down the road. >> the sad truth is that the president wanted a blank chec

joining us to talk about the standoff is our political analysts, david gergen. seen you and you have said it's time for a truce and cease-fire, and is that likely to happen in this climate? >> we still have tough road to go here. it will continue right through next week, i am afraid. i think there is an ever the in the senate to come up with a bill, which would in effect bring a truce, and would satisfy the president and would satisfy mitch mcconnell and a lot of people in the senate and john boehner, and whether it would satisfy house republicans, that's a big question. >> two press conferences in one week, monday and friday, and one last week, and he's trying to make his case to the american people. this is working? is this helping his cause? >> i think he has helped himself modestly. he has pointed to the polls and his press conference showed today the support is building for the balanced approach he is looking for, which includes tax increases. we have a showdown coming between the more conservative elements of the republican party in the house of representa
