joining me now, political analyst david gergen, former advisor to presidents reagan, and clinton.mate change, veney accine vaccine equality, supply chain issues. to your experience, does talk like this bring tangible results we can see quicking? >> there were a time in the 1970s when g-20 meetings were created, essentially leaders of the western world. they were very productive meetings. people got to know each other, they were small, they were intimate. you got to know the person on the other side. you spent time hanging out, you had dinner together, and very much advanced the world and made a cooperative leadership. now these are 20 different nations represented. it's much harder to have it, nothing stands out. frankly, there is a sense of real disappointment coming out of this portion of the g-20 so far. and that is a lot of the countries there said they would do great things and they were going to set a high bar for climate, but they had no plans to get there. we've been there before, and it doesn't work. >> yeah. and, david addleman, you quote an op-ed saying this was america

joining us now to discuss david gergen, senior political analyst who served as adviser to just four u.sou have seen your share of difficult negotiations through the years. as you look at the two sides here, and a very public bout of infighting and bomb throwing, do you see a way out? do you see them making a deal? >> well, you can't count out nancy pelosi ever as you know. she's a master in such situations. she always seems to bring it home at the last minute. i must say, this is the steepest mountain i've ever seen her try to climb. i think it is going to be very tough. if you think that -- mentioned 1.5, the democrats are 3.5 and will scale it, they want the democrats want to -- some democrats want to scale it back to 2.1, that's a huge problem for the progressive side. taking all that money out. the way out of this may be to shorten the time length of the applications, instead of ten year plan, a five year plan, you automatically cut a lot from it and it may be easier to cut the time than to cut the programs. >> it would be interesting to see if maybe that ends up being perhaps an op

. >> let's bounce to david gergen. we got him, cnn senior political analyst joining us. the report is nancy pelosi doesn't put a bill on the floor lose -- except when she does. this has not been a good run for the democrats. hous howe big a deal is it that if they do something tuesday it actually has to happen? >> well, if they do something on tuesday and it fails, they can't get the vote or whatever, i think that would be another significant blow. as it is, right now, chris, you know, he's not getting much help. if anything there's a lot of questions in europe about his capacity, his authority to get things done. and you know, he went -- the real damage was done because he didn't bring a victory to europe with him. now he's playing catchup. and you know, they get back, but i -- yes, i think it would definitely help him if he gets the deal done. there's a question of reliability among americans. can you deliver? if we get in a conversation with iranians, will you go to a deal that really will stick, that, you know, even if somebody from another party is elected, will tha

exactly what david gergen is mentioning. can they reduce the time frame for some of these social programs that they consider to be priorities and in that way, find some cost savings, and revisit them in a couple of years to determine whether or not they should go a little bit longer. but wolf, they are going to have a hard time, because each and every one of these programs has a specific set of constituencies that passionately want them to be a part of this package. and they're going to have to make some tough choices here. so this is not going to be an easy process, but you're right, they have taken that first step of acknowledging that the number has to come down, but getting there won't be easy. >> and that's why the president has just said, it could be six minutes, six days, six weeks to get this done. he promises, it will get done eventually. phil, what are your sources saying over there about president biden offering a range for a possible reconciliation price tag? we know the president wants to pass transformative leg

also, david gergen. advisers to both parties since the nixon administration.ou about some of your latest reporting that the former president is thinking seriously about running again. even going so far as to tell some of the people around him that he is running. can you just talk about more of what you have learned? >> yeah, anderson. i mean, i don't know whether donald trump is actually going to run again, whether he could actually get elected again given that he is still perpetuating a lie that the election was stolen. given his role in january 6th. but mike alan and i are hearing from people close to the president now that there has been a shift since the end of the summer till now, that they now believe it's definitely more than 50% likely. and another person told me this week that if the republicans win the senate, as well as the house next year, there could be irresistible to president trump. >> david, what do you make of that? >> i think the signs are just as margaret says. the signs are that he's increasingly interested. strikingly, anderson, his inter

cnn's senior political analyst, david gergen and former u.s. attorney, preet. immediately after the deadly capitol attack on january 6th, senator grassley said this. i'm quoting. everyone must take responsibility for the destructive actions yesterday including the president. did you ever think, david, you'd see republicans as experienced as senator grassly, for example, standing by trump as he spouts these new election lies? >> no. i never dreamed that we would have a trump, much less a republican party who held the whole country hostage and ran a republican ticket that could bring us keeply into a constitutional crisis. the real crisis that's coming now, wolf, is this nightmare. that donald trump does indeed run as seems likely. he wins the nomination and the general election, he falls three or four points percentage points behind the democratic nominee and 17 red states, they'll be put into place mechanisms to strip those states of those votes and to substitute republican votes. that will bring us into a constitutional crisis and could split the country in tw
