keith fimian is expected to concede allowing gerry connolly to serve a second term. sarah simmons is live with a closer look. >> reporter: good morning. as you know, this has been a very tight race. virginia congressman, the incumbent, gerry connolly, he has been leading in this race, leading by nearly 1,000 votes. but according to the "washington post" today, his challenger republican keith fimian is expected to concede in this race although all we have at this point from the fimian camp is that they releaseed a statement saying they will make his intentions known later on this morning. connolly meanwhile was hospitalized as you know last week after the election and has since been released. his condition was kept pretty quiet until yesterday when a campaign spokesman said that, while the congressman was visiting his doctor, he was hospitalized for a blood clot in an artery. it looks like connolly was able to hold off keith fimian once again. as you may remember, the two ran for the same seat two years ago and connolly won by 12 points. this race was much closer and

gerry connelly back to work after a hospital stay and we're about an hour away from a major announcement from keith fimian. he is expected to concede in the race for the 11th district. >> this will pave the way for connelly to serve another term. sarah simmons is live with a closer look. good morning, sarah. >> reporter: good morning, tony and allison. terry connelly still in the lead. these are the unofficial results we have right now. the results will be certified on november 22nd but he leads by just under 1,000 votes. but again, according to the washington post who is reporting this morning. keith fimian the republican challenger in this case is expected to conceit later on in morning. they did say they will make their intentions known here in the next couple of hours. but by law under state election law here in virginia, he was ayou loued a re -- allowed a recount because it was close but it appears he will not ask for one. fimian held off because this is the second time the two member have faced off for this very seat. connelly won by 12 points two years ago but this time around it

and congressman gerry connolly out in virginia and the washington, d.c., suburbs has won as well as rick larson from washington state. both of those races are now over after republican candidates conceded. out in california's 20th district, congressman jim costa in a very tight contest against a first-time candidate named adam. the republican candidate leads by 145 votes at the moment. but there are still 50,000 absentee ballots left to be counted. the fresno area doesn't count their ballots fast. it looks like jim costa will be safe in the long term. turn then to illinois' eighth congressional scrict. start to get bad news for democrats. melissa bean, sort of off-the-radar campaign. not a lot of people expected her to be challenged this coming year or in the 2010 mid terms. now she trails our opponent, joe walsh, by a couple hundred votes. if melissa bean does not take the lead, the republican ballots will come in later this month from other more republican parts of that district. that's going to be real bad news for her if she can't take the lead today, she's probably not coming back t

gerry connolly, the seat previously held by tom davis, another freshman democrat -- it is another indicator for where tonight is going. >> all of those congressional races in virginia will be good indicators. 11th district, certainly, because congressman connolly has positioned his republican opponent as too extreme, as many democratic incumbents have done in this election year. he has the virginia -- northern virginia suburbs in that district. it will be telling to see whether or not that message works and helps him keep his seat. the fifth district race is a huge for democrats and congressman perriello. president obama coming in there to campaign for perriello is not really surprising. if there is one embattled congressional democrat who it would make the most sense for president obama to go in and campaign for, and on the part of the democratic incumbent to embrace the president, it would be tom perriello. he has not run from the core parts of president obama's agenda. he voted for health care, the stimulus. he has not run from president obama. they stood next to each other just ahead of
