gerri willis. expiration dates don't mean. > they just don't mean much. fda's study showed that 88% of the medications they studied could have been on your shelf and worked and been fine for 5 1/2 years after the expiration date. think about that. if you are taking -- it is not just prescription meds. it is also over-the-counter meds. aspirin, whatever p you can keep using them. one of the experts said at least a year after the expiration date and the study, research, shows possibly even longer. there is only one drug we found a problem with. that's an antibiotic. the ones on your screen can last even longer, up to 15 years. >> what should consumers be looking out for here? >> what makes your drug work worse? if you put it in your bathroom, medicine cabinet, where there's all the steam, that's bad thing. don't put them there. you can keep them longer if you put them somewhere else, clean, dry and cool. that's a better thing to do. most of the folks i'm talking to said keep them for an average to 6 to 12 months after the expiration date. you will be fine.
