. >> gershon, why do you think that palestinian islamic jihad, which is a separate terror group operatingn gaza, why do you think that they, at this point, said we have hostages, here's video of two of them. we're ready to release them on humanitarian grounds. what's with the timing? >> well, i think that, first of all, they're all under control of hamas, even if hostages are being held by islamic jihad. after a month of this war, hamas is taking control. they have the special unit to deal with hostages. they're trained and disciplined troops, and hamas would not tolerate anyone having control. if a video was released last night, it was done with the agreement of hamas, and it's part of the psychological warfare that's going on, aimed at putting pressure on the israeli government through israeli society. when they see live hostages, first of all, we're all very happy to see they're alive, but we have to understand that this is part of the negotiations that's going on, and it's a tool to apply pressure on israel. >> gershon, you make a critical point that reflects some of the frustration i

joining us now, gershon. resulted in the release of a soldier in 2011. it's always good to have you especially on a day like this where it appears we are on the cusp of something quite big. >> yes. well, it's the first optimistic day we've really had since the beginning of the war on october 7th. it will pass through the cabinet and we have to see that hamas is prepared to implement it. the logistics are complicated. israel will have to redeploy some of the troops in order to facilitate the pause or cease fire. israel is obligated to cease its drone observations above the gaza strip for six hours a day so that hamas can find ways to release the hostages without them being discovered where their places of hiding are. israel has apparently agreed to that. we need to see the hostage ls come out. they'll be transferred to the international red cross and brought to the israeli side of the border. either directly or through egypt. at the same time, israel will be releasing prisoners from the israeli prisons. three

i spoke to gershon baskin. he has an interesting perspective on this.israeli soldier, gilad shalit, who was held by hamas for five years. we talked about how difficult and delicate this negotiation process is likely to have been. it's very similar to the gilad shalit case, in that a proposal was put on the table for gilad shalit six months after he was abducted, but it took another five years before the parties were ripe enough to make the decision. the deal we have seen unfolding today was put on the table day three or four of the war by my contacts and people in the israeli government, and hamas and qatar and egypt. and it was the logical deal that everyone should have thought about, and probably did, of women and children and elderly and sick and wounded, in exchange for women and children prisoners in israel. i collected all the data — how many prisoners there were, what kind of offences they'd committed. none of them had murdered israelis and they were all from the west bank and not important hamas people. so this was an easy deal to do, but it too
