it was gertrude who continued to bring artists into the home. >> reporter: but gertrude stein wanted to be more than a collector. >> she liked collecting but after a while, her public image as a patron and a collector bothered her. she wanted to be known the same way picasso was known, for her creative work, not just the collecting of others. >> reporter: stein thought of herself as a writer, whose work, corn contends, has come back into fashion. >> she was outside the mainstream until really feminism rediscovered her and began to look at her through a completely different lens. >> reporter: in addition to writing several books including the bestselling autobiography, stein composed the la brett toe for a cutting edge opera converged by virgil thompson. three acts with an all black cast produced in 1934. both museums are showing excerpts. as a writer and a collector, gertrude was a very strong personality who encouraged her own celebrity and loved being painted and sculpted. perhaps the most famous portrait is by picasso, which both museums are featuring in different forms. >> gertru

fothe for this shooting there ws a shooting on gertrude avenue it. 23 year-old was standing in front of his building. police believe that somehow maybe these shootings were related. a couple weeks ago there were four separate shootings and they believe those shootings could be retaliatory. as far as this case is concerned they do not have a motive or if these people were targeted or it was random. the area of central and north of richmond. so far, no names have been released. the 23 year-old shot on gertrude avenue, non- life threatening injuries. >> do they have any witnesses? are the witnesses afraid to speak? >> hysterically they have trouble with witnesses coming forward, so far there are no witnesses that have come forward. >> there was an officer involved shooting high, this is the second in the month. the first was at the civic center art station. some debut residents -- some bay view residents believe this is causing more tension between officers and police. >> an officer involved shooting that killed a man, residents are saying is senseless. some people and gave you are comp

there is one i want to talk about, "seeing gertrude stein." >> gertrude stein is a local woman.he was raised in oakland. she was an extraordinary individual who helped create -- many people call for the mother of modernism. years ago, i was introduced to someone doing research on her. i thought it would be an extraordinary exposition to take her and understand her at all for complexity. that is what we have on view during the summer of 2011. >> it is full of wonderful drawings, paintings, and sculpture. >> there is incredible art on view. we have photographs. we have sculpture. we have a lot of different things. we have a little something made for her by picasso. there are five different ways of looking at her life. it is not in chronological installation. it is looking at how she is portrayed in help artists, painters, and photographers presented her and how she thought about her own style and presentation. many people think she always had short hair. it was not until she was 52 that she cut off all of her hair. the second element is called "domestic stein." alice b. toklas was
