this is the getty center. there's also the getty villa, which is over in pacific palisades, both of which were impacted by the palisades fire. palisades fire even came close to the getty center here. but last tuesday, last wednesday, when i was right there at the heart of the palisades fire, we kept hearing reports that the fire is getting really close to the getty villa. that was actually the one that was built first in the late 70s, that holds thousands of pieces of artwork from ancient rome and ancient greece. i mean, some of it is more than 8000 years old. but even when they built it in the 70s, they had the foresight to realize that they needed it to be to withstand fire. what they did a renovation several years ago, they even strengthened it more. so the outside is, you know, it's a stone exterior. there's tile roofs. they also have these extensive sprinkler systems that has the ability to basically become airtight. and it seals off almost like a vault to keep any embers from getting inside the museum. t

again, just west of the getty villa, we're seeing 50, 50, 50% of homes that somehow have been saved, 50% of homes that are destroyed, and in some cases it's every other. so we're going to wrap you around this corner right here in a line is 3 to 4 homes that are destroyed with fallen trees. and although these are all flattened, there's a lot of hotspots, which is why we have seen fire engines and water tenders and ground crews here in thiseighborhood because of those winds. if one of those sparks picks up, that is when the fire could spread to other homes below. this is a perfect example actually right here. and we've been watching this little hotspot for about 20 minutes or so. it may look small, but it can't deceive you in situations like this. we've gone through this almost this entire neighborhood here, just north and just west of the getty villa, that iconic art museum that at this point is still standing. and we can tell you this neighborhood has been decimated. and with these winds not stopping, it's going to be a long day night overnight into tomorrow and the coming days ahead

it's burned more than just about 40 acres right across from the getty museum. at one point, that fire led to an evacuation order for the community of bel air. that was just a few hours after another fire near castaic exploded in size. that one is called the hughes fire, and it has burned more than 10,000 acres. it's just 14% contained this morning. these new fires are now just adding to the historic disaster that has been unfolding for more than two weeks now, stretching fire crews to their limits. they're still working to contain the palisades fire and eaton fire. president trump, in a new interview, he went after california's democratic governor for his handling of it all. trump is planning to visit the state tomorrow. cnn's josh campbell. he's in l.a. following all of this for us. josh, what can you tell us about the situation this morning? yeah. >> kate, i mean, our. community here across los angeles is on edge because of those red flag wind conditions that continue here. and just as you mentioned, overnight, yet another fire popping up. i'm now in the sepu

the getty villa is in i mean, look at this neighborhood like you have some homes that have made it. but it's, you know, you deal survivor's guilt. if you have a home and your neighbors are gone, what is your neighborhood if it looks like a bomb went off in it, this is the heart of the palace aides here and look at look at this neighborhood. this is one of those where, you know, you have a few random homes that are still there, but 95 98% of the homes in that neighborhood are gone. so it's it's truly sobering. and and depressing really to go through this map. but obviously, if you're in a shelter at a friend's home, had to evacuate, certainly down there, people are going to this website using this resource to try zoom in and figure out, you know what, what is left of my home. so unfortunately, that's that's where we are southern california. want to send things over to our meteorologist kathy trafton who has been looking at conditions here in the bay and down their hike after. >> i ran well, it really heartbreaking. the situation as it continues. >> critical fire danger, extreme fire

that's near the getty center and ucla. california's department of forestry, saying that more than 38,000 acres have been scorched, with more than 12,000 structures simply destroyed. new today, the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms and explosives is taking the lead on determining the origin and the cause of the palisades fire, and cnn has team coverage for you. cnn's stephanie elam is in l.a .'s brentwood neighborhood. anchor erin burnett is in the pacific palisades. let's start first with erin. erin, i know you've been on the ground now for a couple of days. we're coming to you as this fire is threatening to move ever more eastward and toward more homes, more people's lives. what are you seeing? >> well, jessica, you know, i mean, it is incredible the devastation that already is, is everywhere. massive devastation. thousands of people desperately trying to get back into areas that have been completely razed and destroyed, just to even have a glimpse of their homes, forced to leave with nothing. but at this hour, the

sorry, the getty center being evacuated. one of the most iconic cultural institutions, museums with $6 billion worth of artworks now being protected with first responders around there, around me here, lots of aircraft going up and down these hills. what they're doing now is that they're dumping water in the spots that need the most. so we're right between like close to the 405 just north of here, the san fernando valley, that is a very densely populated residential area. as this fire is making its way to the other side of this hill, a lot more people are in danger. that's why they are receiving these evacuation orders. fred, that also come with orders for a curfew. we're hearing and we're hearing from officials here on the ground as we're making our way through these neighborhoods. how many looters are people with the intention to loot? they have encountered? we had four more arrests overnight. at least 20 people so far have been arrested for looting and similar crimes. that is a concern that residents have and that authorit

one a good example is the getty museum.he getty museum survived all this, as it did in a previous fire, because they not only had a building that was designed to be resistant to these kind of fires, but also they cleared all the vegetation away from the immediate area around the building. yeah. >> i mean, what is your sense of the future here for california? i mean, we know that these fires are becoming more deadly because of just how dry it is. they had basically no rain for more than half of the year last year. but is the state really doing, in your view, as much as it can be doing, given the reality of the climate, given the reality of the topography that they are, they are inhabiting? >> right? so this is really an issue for for us in the country, really to think about this because similar kind of thing happened along the eastern shore with hurricanes or, you know, with the, uh, with tornadoes, things like that. and so i think the issue for us is this is that we really need to have a much deep dive into what actually ha

we spoke with cal fire that the palisades fire was approaching and you bel-air, brentwood and the getty center area. what is the threat this morning. is it as um immediate as it was several hours ago. >> well what ended up happening was there was a little bit of a weather shift. the wind was coming out of the west, and that drove that fire to the eastward. so that's what that's what caused those evacuation orders to then be pushed out for that west side of the 405, and then just south of 101. as the fire continued to move in a northward and eastward direction. um, today is really going to be critical in terms of the air operations and the operations on the ground to try and stop those fires from any further northward or eastward spread. but, you know, everyone's got their work cut out for you. i will say this was mentioned earlier. you know, two of the major incidents down here are the kenneth fire and the hurst fire. and those do have a much larger percent of containment. and so you're going to see crews that will be released from those incidents that can then be deployed to the palisa

and when you refer to the getty home hardening, that is an essential component to go with fuels treatment. and also because each individual occupancy structure, whether it's residential or commercial, has to take a look at the construction, but also the vegetation that's surrounding it, so that when there's embers being thrown one two miles out in front and a wind driven event like this, they don't have a receptive fuel bed to land into because once it ignites a structure, then the ones that are close by, which we call exposures, there's that real threat that occurred here on structure, the structure threat. so it's a it's a multi-dimensional approach to fuel reduction, to home hardening for community resilience. >> do we need to strengthen brush clearing rules? i know many cities already have them. is it maybe more important to enforce them then? >> i think it's essential. i think that, um, in this. um, regulations, for example, dictate how how fuels, how growth is cleared, how it's removed. and i think it's a good opportunity right now in light of this, to examine those and to remove ob

a new evacuation order is in place, extending to one of the city's busiest freeways and the iconic getty center. it's been an all out effort to stop the rapid spread and to try, try to prevent more destruction. but as you can see, the damage already done is truly staggering. at least 10,000 properties have been destroyed completely. now, the question on everyone's mind how could this have happened? well, it's time someone began to answer it. california governor gavin newsom is ordering an investigation into what caused some hydrants to run dry early on, and the l.a. fire chief is calling out the city for cutting her department's budget by $17 million. >> the fire department needs help. we can no longer sustain where we are. we do not have enough firefighters. and i warned i rang the bell, that these additional cuts could be very, very devastating for our ability to provide public safety. >> well, as fingers are pointing in several directions, we're learning tonight that l.a. mayor karen bass had a meeting with the fire chief. after those comments, and we don't know what was said to be a

you look at the getty center itself, and we're going to show you this later today, that art museum, they were able to protect that in part because of decisions that they'd made before about undergrowth and taking a fire prevention. but right across the street it is completely leveled and gone. and that is the nature of this. you might see one home up and then a complete street decimated. that is how the fire is spreading. and right now southern california, so many people had you know, you talk about the communities that it's hitting. and in palisades, people have talked about how many of these people were wealthy. well, that is true. but many of them had spent their entire lives working and struggling to try to buy a home here. and i met one of them. he and his wife had spent the past ten years working, trying to earn enough money to buy a home here. he had originally his parents had lived in a trailer park nearby, finally bought a home in pacific palisades, and now they're having a baby in a week. they finished the nursery closed on their house a month ago, finished the nursery this wee
