giffords was shot in the head. she's been recovering.office this year to focus on her continuing recovery from her brain injuries. in a tweet today, gifford's husband, former astronaut mark kelly, said they were horrified to hear about the tragedy in colorado. mark kelly joins us live. it was 1 1/2 years ago when your wife was shot in tucson. what first entered your mind? >> this morning, immediately when i got up, i saw a text message from gabby's former chief of staff who is now the assistant secretary of homeland security for public affairs, pia, and she said co shooting. my national reaction was i thought it meant "commanding officer." i looked through my e-mail and then i saw the cnn breaking news e-mail that outlined what happened. gabby and i had just gotten up. we were just horrified over how could this happen again i mean, just 18 months later. >> and that was her reaction as well obviously? >> yeah, it was, just shocked, sad. this is a really, really difficult time for those folks. it's going to take a long time to recover. >>

struck a balance between talking about his sympathy, in this case, for somebody he knew well, gaby giffords, but also talking about starting a conversation about gun control. the conversation did not go anywhere. we will see if that changes in this case. >> fund-raising -- it seems like mitt romney has taken the lead. >> mitt romney not only raised more than president obama in campaign funds into his campaign and to the republican national committee and the joint committee that his campaign and the republican national committee have set up which has been going on for a couple of months but more concerning, he started to raise a significant amount of small donations donations under $200. he saw a huge spike in this area after the health-care decision came down, upholding the individual mandate, president obama's signature health care legislation. that motivated his face. republicans are excited. they think they have the base on board in addition to the big donors. democrats are starting to fret. it is possible mitt romney is closing the gap in small donors. >> you mentioned in your article t
