gigi barnett explains what is being done. gigi? >> security workers say 29-year- old kenisha thomas, visited her daughter earlier this week. she was able to sneak a kitchen knife into the building to attack her daughter. >> reporter: three days after police arrest 29-year-old kenisha thomas for stabbing her 8-month-old baby during a supervised visit inside this east baltimore social service office, the state is tightening its safety rules to keep all weapons out. >> we'll -- we will be installing lockers, where bags will be checked prior to going into the rooms. >> reporter: social workers who fear for their safety or a child's security can also request additional security inside the visitation rooms. although thomas's case is still under investigation, the social worker had no backup. and thomas went through a metal detector. >> our employees performed admirably in that case, and in some cases, heroically, putting themselves in harm's way to save the child. >> the social services union says it has complained about security in the

i'm gigi barnett. that story is coming up in tonight's school watch. ,,,,,,,, >>> it's 5:30. popdegrees with light rain. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. we're following breaking news out of baltimore county. captain mike perry is over the scene with more. captain mike, what's happening? >> we are at the old court metro station. this is in the pikesville area of baltimore county. for a report of metro train accident. now, when we arrived on the scene, firefighters were extinguishing a small fire on the tracks. apparently, what happened was a metro train was leaving the old port stopped. it went about 30 yards north of the station. collided with something on the tracks. and then continued northbound. you see the train sitting there. now, apparently because you know, it requires electricity to make these trains run, they had to shut the power off to the rails, in order to get the fire extinguished. it is not clear whether there were any injuries to anyone on board, when they struck whatever it was that they did hit on the tracks. but the fire has been extinguishe

gigi barnett has more on the gruesome discovery. gigi? >> police say robert jarrett would never let them search his house, even after he reported her missing years ago. this week, they got into her backyard and his wife isn't missing anymore. >> reporter: in the backyard of this house on claire drive in eldridge, howard county, police make a decades old discovery. they find the body of christine jarrett, missing for 20 years. >> that's crazy. >> all this time, she was under the floridas -- floorboards of the shed, buried in concrete. in 1991, he report his wife missing. he said then that christine jarrett walked away from their house one night after a heated argument, never to be seen or heard from again. >> this was someone who was cared about in the community. she had a lot of friends and family members. and we never forgot. >> reporter: police said they always suspected jarrett, but never had enough to charge him. until this week, a tipster came forward. >> this is one of those cases right from the beginning we knew it sounded suspicio

wjz and gigi barnett are in towson. >> students say this was a tough weekend for them all. classmate died not far from campus, the other in a hit-and-run accident. >> reporter: on the campus of towson university, news of ryan bailey and tim corier's deaths spread quickly. a 27-year-old national guardsman, corier served two tours of duty before enrolling at towson and joining kappa sigma fraternity. friends discovered his body in his off campus apartment saturday afternoon. his death doesn't appear suspicious. now an autopsy is underway. >> he's like the older brother a lot of us didn't have. he helped us out so much. we really miss him. >> corier's death came hours after a hit-and-run accident killed ryan bailey. bailey was crossing york road near washington avenue just before 2:00 saturday morning. police say he was hit by an older model silver or white box style car heading north. students are worried that the driver is still out there. >> people would do something like that. natural instinct is to take care of him, but i guess he was thinking about his own skin. >> they'

vic, back to you. >> gigi, thank you. jared is being held without bond on first-and second-degree murder charges. >> sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of the accident. and captain mike perry has more. where are you, mike? >> we are eastbound the at taioga parkway. not far from mondawmin mall. we have a city school police vehicle, which was involved in some sort of a crash. now, it's not clear whether the police vehicle crashed after it lost a tire or lost a tire as a result of the crash. but we do have eastbound gwens falls parkway, closed. looks like duke land street. police are blocking the roadway. city police are conducting the roadway. we understand that the injuries are nonlife-threatening. and as we said, it is not real clear what caused this accident. but we do have a disabled car in the roadway, east of the railroad bridge. and police are going to be working to clean up that accident and investigate and find out what happened. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike perry. >>> well, a well-liked stu

gigi barnett is live in the newsroom with more on the decision in the complicated case. gigi? >> reporter: well, kai, the judge found 28-year-old rubin dunne not guilty in the crash that killed two teenage girls. the girls were hit as they crossed at martin luther king boulevard and pratt street. police arrested rubin dunne. dunne's girlfriend, kendra miles, took the stand and said she was driving but she switched seats with him because he was drunk. the defense said it was impossible to tell for sure which person was behind the wheel. >> reporter: they're still children. >> they're still children. and they were good kids. and they will not die in vain. and believe me, i like both of them and i wish i could bring them back. but it's over. the city of baltimore spoke. >> he was relieved. he thanked god. and then there was some crying later on. you have to realize, he understands what happened in this case. he feels for that family, too. but to take the blame for something he didn't do, that's not right. >> and kendra miles, the girlfriend, pleaded guilty to two counts of being

as gigi barnett explains detectives say they that have been searching for this burglar for months. >> reporter: police say this man enters office buildings then burglarizes several suites. detectives have been searching for him since january. >> we will respond to one burglary and discover that we actually have four or five businesses that have been targeted. >> investigators say he strikes at night, stealing as much as he can cart out. >> postage stamps, money, office supplies, electronic equipment. >> he has even swiped food from the kitchen area, police say since december he has hit buildings in cockysville and the franklin area, the latest this week. >> on april third between midnight and 12:40 a.m., we discovered three businesses have been targeted in an office building in the 400 block of frederick road. >> blinds were drawn this weekend at the catonsville complex and they relm installed new security equipment. police say that is wise because the suspect strikes when nobody is there. >> no reports of confrontations. he simply breaks into the businesses while no one is there. >>
