we get the latest on the story from gil diaz who is on the scene in san leandro. gil? >> reporter: hi, good morning, guys. business as usual inside this walmart right behind me but what's unusual is what's happening outside. you see this yellow tape. the shooting happened a few hundred feet away from the main entrance. you see in the distance that there are probably clothes and belongings on the street. we are told that that belongs to the victim. take a look from up above from chopper 5. i'll tell you what happened. it happened just before 2:00. the man was coming out of walmart with a shopping cart full of goods with his family or his friends. they were getting back to their car when they were accosted by a group of would-be robbers. they tried to get their goods and shots rang out. a man was shot. police came. he was rushed to eden hospital in castro valley. he is in stable condition so far this morning. yeah, it's a crazy time because the family members also jumped one of the would-be robbers, detained him. that's who police have in custody for questioning. they ar

gil, good morning. >> reporter: hi, guys. good morning. yeah, it happened in the parking lot outside the walmart an as the morning progresses, there are more investigators arriving at the scene. it happened around 1507 this morning. there is a lot of yellow tape in this parking lot. it's quite a distance away from the main entrance probably 400 to 500 feet but that shooting took place beyond this stop sign in this parking lot. you might see some stuff on the ground, some clothes strewn. those we're told are the victim's belongings. police say this was basically a robbery gone bad. according to officers, the victim was with his family or friends going to his car with a cartful of goods from walmart when robbers tried to get their goods. now, the victim's group tried to fight off the robbers and unfortunately, that's when gunshots got fired. by the time police arrived at the scene, they were patrolling the area for, you know, all night, because it is black friday. when it got to this area, they did find the victim on the ground. the victim i

gil diaz is at children's hospital oakland with the latest on the victims' conditions and look at new surveillance video. >> reporter: i spoke to the hospital security guard. he said he was not authorized to give us an update on the 1- year-old boy and referred me to the media relations spokesman who will be in later this morning. but yeah, he was rushed to this hospital, reportedly shot in the head. he was in critical condition. we have video of the shooting incident and we're told that this site was a music video -- rap video being shot at 7th and willow streets. you will see people standing around near a truck in the parking lot and all of a sudden people start ducking and running for cover, some of them under the truck. another person you will see fires back at the assailants and from a different angle you see in a different video. we see three people rounding a corner all of them wearing hooded sweatshirts and start firing at the crowd. now, one of the shooters stays in the front lines longer than the other two. all the victims rushed to hospitals before officers arrived. some of

gil diaz reports from oakland where the boy had surgery. >> reporter: good morning. i'm sure it was a long night for the 1-year-old boy's family and friends who have been here at children's hospital right behind me. the boy's identified as hiram. here's video of who was leaving the hospital this morning. this happened a half hour ago, investigators from the oakland police department i would say probably eight of them leaving the hospital, not quite sure why they were here, maybe to talk to the family. we talked to them briefly. they said the boy is alive still but clinging to life. he is in critical condition. they don't have any suspects right now. and they are not questioning anyone at this time. they looked pretty tired to me. but here's that chilling surveillance video of the shooting from yesterday around 6:0. people are hanging out and they duck for cover. they are running from the parking lot. even going under the truck. you will see in this brief second that one person is firing back at the assailant. you will also see in the reverse shot of the surveillance

gil diaz reports. >> reporter: funeral services beginning this morning at 11 a.m. at corbett high school. the chairs are bought out, a podium set up. a big turnout especially among law enforcement officers. officer capoot was with the vallejo police department since 1993. prior to that, he was with the california highway patrol and he is also a marine veteran. after his death a growing memorial outside the police department's lobby, residents stopping by to bring flowers, note cards and prayers. he also coached girls basketball at vallejo high school. the man behind the killing, henry smith, from fairfield. he pled not guilty to a slew of charges including capital murder and murder against a peace officer. if he was found guilty he may get the death penalty. his next court appearance is tomorrow. the shooting happened on november 17 along janice street. officer capoot cast chasing him by car. police say smith robbed a nearby bank of america chase. after that chase he got out of the car and a foot chase ensued. officer capoot chased after him and allegedly the defen
