gil diaz live at the embarcadero with an update. gil. >> reporter: good morning, frank and grace. we're learning that more than 70 people have been arrested in that early-morning raid which happened just after 1:00. take a look behind me. i know you probably can't see because morning rush hour has just begun but city crews have been hard at work at the plaza cleaning up, power spraying the former site of the campgrounds, making it -- beautifying it so that the people who work here at the embarcadero and financial district have a clean place to go to. but yeah, a lot of people have been upset emotional not only for protestors but also people who have been watching the "occupy" movement. it happened at 1:00. more than 100 tents at the site, more than 100 protestors at the campsite according to chief greg suhr. he says that today was the day to do that raid because he believed that negotiations between the organizers and the city officials had broken down to the point where there was no communication between the two groups. so what's next for "occupy sf"? i talked to several protesto

gil diaz reports. what an architectura feat. >> reporter: especially when the cable is going to be suspended from both ends of the bridge instead of anchored on the ground. this is how the cable will be looped around the bridge. first of all, cable is about a mile long 2.5 feet wide and weighs about five tons. it will be anchored to the east end of the bridge first, goes to the west end and then wraps around the west end of the bridge until it goes back up to the tower and then back into the east end of the bridge. this is different from other suspension bridges because it's anchored on the ends of the bridge, not the ground. this procedure is the world's longest looped suspension cable in any bridge. yeah, it's going to take about two days to complete. they haven't really said what time exactly they are going to start but it will take a couple of days. it will be a distraction. so you might see a loop around the bridge and construction crews on the cat walks, keep your eyes on the road. >> stay safe.

gil diaz is there to give us an update. gil, good morning. >> reporter: hi, good morning, guys.ell, it was definitely an abrupt morning for 45 to 50 residents in san leandro waking up to no water. but seems like the situation has been resolved. east bay municipal utility district shut down the 12-inch pipe a half hour ago. it started around 4:00 this morning when a passerby spotted the burst pipe on leonard next to john muir middle school. police say when they got here, it was bursting like a volcano more than 8 feet into the air. the fire department came to the scene first to shut it off followed by e.b. m.u.d. and like i said it was a 12" pipe. they were able to shut off just sections of the pipe. they didn't have to shut down the entire pipeline. but 45 to 50 people, they should have their water on right now. but east bay m.u.d. will replace the burst pipe. they are going to dig it out, replace it so they will be here for eight hours. leonard drive is going to be should down for most of the day. so avoid this area if you can. and interestingly enough, frank and grace, east ba

good morning to you, gil. >> reporter: good morning. it happened wednesday night at the shark tank right behind me a game between the sharks and vancouver canucks. as you mentioned, grace, she was attending the game with her sister. her name is maggie [ indiscernible ] , 16 years old from discovery bay. she moved to california from canada a couple of years ago. she and her sister wearing canuck gear attended that game. but i guess there is a woman in back of them in the row behind them who was a loyal sharks fan and when at one point during the game when the sharks scored a goal, that woman raised both her hands and smacked it right into the back of maggie's head. herger fell forward dazed. i guess what's distressing is that she has suffered a traumatic experience four years ago when she underwent surgery for a brain tumor. to this day it's benign. she said that woman had been harassing her all throughout the game and that woman was drunk. sharks released a statement last night. the sharks said that "arena staff along with san jose poli

gil, good morning. >> reporter: hi, frank. good morning. those residents who foiled that federal lawsuit against the city -- who filed that federal lawsuit against the city are hoping the judge will grant a temporary injunction against the closure of the pool at berkeley high school. it's one of just a few warm pools in the city. they are closing it because the district is making way for new construction and because the pool is old and seismically unsafe. but supporters of the pool went ahead and did a mock funeral last night at the pool. as you can see here they entered the pool with a floating coffin with candles and flowers on top of it. now, it is kept at 92 degrees and that's very ideal for the elderly who use it as well as those with special needs. in fact, there is a special needs aquatic program also known as "snap" that uses the berkeley high school pool twice a week. there's about 45 students participate in. it the new construction is set to begin next summer and users of the pool are afraid they won't have anywhere else to go. >>

gil diaz reports from oakland. >> reporter: good morning. protestors have declared victory.of them here at the port of oakland to block these truck drivers' paths. the last demonstrators left the premises around 5 a.m. this morning. the port's entrance gates did open around 6:00. and truck drivers were very relieved because they didn't know what was going to happen this morning. there was talk there might be a second day of a port shutdown but that didn't happen. so a lot of these independent truck drivers are happy to know they are going home with a paycheck. this morning's crowd of protestors was small. it turns out they took a vote around 3:00 this morning declared victory and told everyone to go home and that's what they did. in the past 24 hours, thousands of protestors marched to the port. it was mainly a peaceful protest, but two people were arrested yesterday for blocking trucks trying to get into the entrance. other than that everything was fine and everything is quiet here on the waterfront, frank. but just a few minutes ago, i checked out the "occupy oakland"'s tw

good morning to you, gil. >> reporter: good morning. here at the corner of sea view and bermuda and details are sketchy but here's what we know so far. it happened last night around 11:30. they were trying to make contact with a man in the area. and for some reason, the man was allegedly exhibiting some threatening behavior which prompted one of the police officers to shoot at him. he was rushed to regional medical center, where he later died 45 minutes later so that's about 12:15 this morning. we just got to the scene here and it's very quiet and it's very dark, as well. i actually talked to one of the residents on the block. and he says that he did not hear any gunshots fired last night. he didn't see any police officers at the scene which is unusual because if there was a fatal officer-involved shooting there should be a scene at this intersection but he says he was home all night and didn't hear anything. so we are trying to get in touch with the san jose police department and get the details so that -- so keep in touch here on cbs

gil diaz joins us from south san francisco to explain. what's going on, gil? >> reporter: hi, good morning, frank and grace. yeah, this is a very strict law proposed by the national transportation safety board. this is definitely a topic for the water cooler. it is the strict proposal. ntsb doesn't want you to text or talk while driving even with a bluetooth or other hands-free device. you won't be able to do that. now, the ntsb has no authority to enforce such a nationwide ban but it hopes that lawmakers will catch on. the ntsb says any type of distracted driving is dangerous. it did a study and discovered that on any given time of the day, 13.5 million drivers are on some sort of hands-free device. last year, nearly 3100 fatal accidents involved distracted driving. now, one member of the ntsb said that distracted driving is becoming the new dui. it's becoming an epidemic. >> many times, the distraction that is there is not just one that's about manipulation of something or a visual distraction. it's about acog anyive distraction. it's about not being engaged

how's it going at sfo this morning, gil? >> reporter: well, it is a little hectic here but i think a lot of travelers have prepared for the big day. good morning, grace. yeah, i want to show you what it looks at a tsa check-in line now. there is kind of a line already. we have been here a couple of hours and this is what it's been looking like all morning. this is just a reminder, if you are flying out, give yourself extra time to check in. look at that line. a lot of people standing in line checking in. you know how long and tedious it gets and how some people are impatient to get through that tsa line. but sfo officials estimate that 134,000 travelers are going to be passing through the airport gates just today. between the middle of december through january 2, the airport is going to see an increase of about a 5% increase of passenger loads compared to last year. that is about 2 million passengers. interestingly enough, statewide, other airports will be seeing a decrease of passenger loads by as much as 9%. the reason it'

good morning, gil. >> reporter: good morning.his planned extension leaving from this fremont bart station right behind me to san jose. i talked to some passengers leaving here this morning. they would like to be able to go to san jose when they want. but the vta board members will be meeting around 8:30 this morning to vote on a construction contract worth about $772 million. i know it's a lot of money but according to the board members, that's $75 million less than what they estimated it would cost. also, the construction could be done faster by late 2016. that's more than a year ahead of the original projected deadline. the board members say this extended route will create thousands of jobs and shuttle as many as 46,000 passengers to work each day. but there's still one thing they have to get ahold of and that's federal money from the federal transit administration. fta will decide in february how much it will give vta if it gives any money at all. vta had asked for $900 million but with the economy right now, it could be decre

gil diaz is in richmond with the very latest. gil. >> reporter: hi, grace. good afternoon. yeah. we're standing outside hilltop mall open at 10 a.m. i spoke with the richmond police. they say that the shoe store that carried the air jordan's at this mall are supposed to start selling them again at noon. they stopped selling them around 6:30 this morning when gunshots went off on that crowd. no one thought it would get this much out of hand. but you know what? we have also seen a lot of shoppers are still here. i haven't been able to ask them whether they have been able to grab or nab their air jordans. a lot of them are doing their last-minute christmas shopping. even though this opened at 10:00, those 2,000 woke up around midnight coming out here at one clock, 2:00, fighting the crowds, fighting the police. fighting the mall to nab a pair of shoes. this is a retro black patent leather white shoe that is supposed to be a limited edition and some stores don't have enough to go around. here's the chaos that happened earlier today. good morning, gil. >> reporter: we could hear about a temporary injunction on that this morning. there are only a few warm swimming pools in berkeley and the one closing today is at berkeley high school. the reason it's closing is because there will be school construction here next year and it's seismically unsafe. they held a mock funeral last night bringing in a float with flowers and lit candles on top of it. in pool is kept at 92 degrees and ideal for the elderly and those with special needs. there's a special needs aquatic program known as "snap" that uses this pool twice a week. the new construction is set to begin next summer and pool users are afraid they will have nowhere else to go. >> for some people it means they will die or be in nursing homes because the ability to exercise is crucial to life. >> reporter: there is another warm pool in the city. it's the one at the ymca. it was two warm swimming pools there but "snap" is concerned about having to fight with others to have exclusive access to it during its program. and also, because it's not kept as warm. those two p

. >> gil diaz is in rodeo with the damage. gil, it was lucky nobody was hurt. >> reporter: yeah. lucky, dennis, that no one was hurt. there were people behind the other side of this plywood just moments. this happened just before 10:00. this is the full gospel fellowship. the van went across the parking lot across the grassy area into the children's nursery. there were people in the nursery just before the accident. a special holiday service had just wrapped up at the church. the van began smoking after it crashed into the nursery. the fire units arrived at the scene, but the van stopped smoking or maybe it just never smoked at all. but they did stick around because there is extensive damage to the church and they were afraid about the structural damage. one church-goer said god must have been looking over us tonight because there were no injuries to report. the van destroyed a parking lot concrete slab and you might be able to see tire tracks here still this morning, the shadow from our lighting. you might see tire tracks and right into the nursery but yeah, no one was injured.

good morning, gil. >> reporter: hi, grace. good morning.ell, starting january 9 coming up soon the western walkway of the bridge will be shutting down temporarily. so yeah, even though it's nice to know that bridge officials are maintaining the bridge, whenever they close a walkway that forces the pedestrians and bicyclists to use the same walkway on the other side. the western walkway has been shut down before at the end of may this year they closed it for seismic retrofitting, finishing that two weeks early. not sure how quickly construction crews will work on the western walkway this time of they are going to be working on the battery east bay trail improving it and beautifying it. hopefully, they will have it reopened by april 1. but you have to consider that on a weekend, there's so many pedestrians on the bridge, so many bicyclists, 10,000 pedestrians and 6,000 bicyclists, that it gets very crowded sharing one walkway. now, the width of the bridge sidewalk is only 10 feet wide. so imagine having it cut in half for pedestrians and for

good morning, gil. >> reporter: hi, grace. good morning. yeah.urbing story this morning about that teenager. it happened wednesday night. it was a game between the sharks and the vancouver canucks. as you mentioned, grace, that teenaged girl was a loyal canucks fan. she attended that game with her sister. they are wearing their canucks jerseys and that's where all the trouble began. it seems like there was a 40- year-old-something woman near them who was a loyal sharks fan. and i guess at that point in the game when the sharks scored a goal, the woman had taken both her hands and smacked them at the back of that teenaged girl and that teenaged girl fell forward and felt dazed. of course, you know, some fans told her to suck it up as she was being wheeled into the ambulance but as you mentioned, grace, this teenaged girl has suffered quite a traumatic experience before, four years ago. she did undergo surgery for a brain tumor. she is very shocked at what happened. some witnesses say they didn't see anything. but we do have a statement from the sh

gil diaz joins us to explain this story. good morning to you, gil. >> reporter: hi, grace. good morning, we are outside the atherton police department. not only is this a bizarre story but it's a scary tale because it shows you don't know who to trust especially when they tell you they are a police officer. it happened at this intersection. take a look. alayna and atherton avenues around 6:30 on wednesday night. the woman told police that she was driving west on atherton when a car came behind her with flashing blue lights. so she pulled over. and the man asked her for her driver's license, her vehicle registration and car keys. he told her that the reason she said why am i being pulled over? he said it's because you were driving too close to the driver in front of you. then the man asked some peculiar questions such as do you have anything illegal or edible in your car? not your typical questions. so the man walked back to his car and drove away with her keys. here's who police are looking for had morning. she described the man as between 25 to 50 years old last seen weari

gil diaz is in san francisco. at least they left the lights on for you. >> reporter: yeah. fortunately they left the lights on for me and my photographer this morning. even though the 49ers beat the steelers 20-3, what really stole the show was the two blackouts. even though some fans were laughing, police were not laughing at all. take a look. the first blackout happened just before kickoff around 5:45. then the second blackout happened in the 2nd quarter around 6:40. lights didn't come back until close to 7:00. now, as football fans were groaning, police were investigating because it turns out they received a bomb threat for candlestick just prior to the game beginning. police had searched the stadium's area and determined that the threat was indeed a hoax. then the player of blackouts occurred. that was a weird circumstance there. so what happened? pg&e spokesman says a downed power line may be related to the first outage but for the second outage, pg&e says that their equipment had nothing to do with it. nevertheless, pg&e and candlestick park officials are making sure

gil diaz is in east san jose where police say the suspect was threatening them. gil?> reporter: yeah, good morning, dennis and grace. i just spoke to the public information officer seconds ago. he tell me it didn't happen in this neighborhood where we have been at all morning seaview and bermuda but actually about a mile -- less than a mile away from here at the 2100 block of inman way. the shooting happened last night around 11:30. three officers responded to the scene there at 2100 block of inman way. and they tried to contact him and allegedly he was exhibiting some threatening behavior. at least one of the officers shot him. he was rushed to regional medical center, where he died about 45 minutes later about 12:15 a.m. so it makes sense that none. neighbors here residents that we talked to this morning heard any gunshots overnight. but we are going to be heading to that scene. we asked the public information officer if the man was armed and he said he could not comment on that right now. see keep it here on cbs 5 for the latest details as they develop. >> gil, is

gil diaz with the severe budget challenges at the state and the local levels. >> reporter: the state got its way today. a supreme court ruled the state can get its hands on $1.7 billion of city redevelopment money to offset the large budget deficit. san jose's mayor, chuck reed, is outraged by the outcome. he said in a written statement, today's supreme court decision eliminates critical tools to rebuild our economy, create jobs and revitalize neighborhoods, exactly the kinds of investments california's cities should be making in this recession. now that the redevelopment money has been snatched, the mayor says residents are at risk. they will lose out on projects designed to make their communities safer and better. plus, the redevelopment agency and 400 other agencies across the state will close their doors. the san jose branch helped build the hp pavilion and tech museum. >> 400 agencies have to figure out what to do and we have to address the $1.7 billion gap that the state is facing. >> reporter: the state claims the redevelopment money will be spent on roads, schools and firefig
