he goes to the gilman school in baltimore, 40 grand a year, graduates at the top of his class, goes toleague, is in a fraternity. does all the stuff. on social media he's luigi from fiji. he's in a computer app gaming club. and he gets his degrees, both masters and batchers, in engineering and computer science. along the way spends his sumner stanford -- summer in -- counseling freshmen, incoming freshmen on how to study ai. this guy had accomplished a lot. so where does he become radicalized? we know he worked for an on-line digital automotive marketplace, another place called an roar, gaping platform. he moves to hawaii -- gaming platform -- where a year ago, we found out, he was arrested for criminal trespassing on public land. a year ago this week he pleads guilty, pays a fine, and goes on his way. so what happens in the last year to get him from hawaii, allegedly, if you believe everything we know so far, to this city to allegedly commit the crime we think he committed. >> jesse: and he was obsessed with the unabomber? >> he had read and reviewed on-line the unabomber's manifesto

you went to the same school as this young man in maryland, the gilman boys school. you went to university of pennsylvania, the same undergrad degree he just got. what did you learn in the last two days about this man's family, and quite dominant in maryland? >> first i'll just say that my mind has been boggled. i've been following united healthcare case since last week and stuff, i worked for a company that was acquired by united health, so i know people who know brian thompson quite well. luigi mangione was described to me by teachers, classmates that i talked to today, as someone who's incredibly bright, charismatic, a leader, someone who is very positive in high school, and seemed to have the whole world at his feet when he went off to college. but there was a turn these past couple years and we are still reporting on exactly what happened. his life very much changed. he dropped off the grid and was unknown to his friends these past couple years. >> why? >> it seems it may have been connected with an injury that he had to his back. again, we are still reporting.

he was the valedictorian of his 2016 class at the elite all boys' gilman school in baltimore. and later earned computer science degrees from the university of pennsylvania. >> i knew of him. i knew him somewhat well. he was a nice kid. >> reporter: he spent time in hawaii in 2022 and 2023. two sources who knew him then say he suffered from back pain due to an injury. >> wow. okay and we are also starting to see panel emerging conversation on social media. people who are saying that he is sort of a hero for doing what he did. and you heard governor josh shapiro there in pennsylvania just saying this man is not a hero. the hero are the people -- who called in mcdonald's and said look, this is the guy. come get him. but it's just sad to see this emerging conversation in our nation that frustration over a nation's health care system. which is arguably in trouble and broken. is now translating into this instinct to sort of celebrate somebody who would take a life. >> i know and i mean, i think it's -- kind of curious and interested to find out really what led him to this point. >>

the suspect is already facing charges for a similar incident earlier this year near the gilman playground in the bayview neighborhood. in that incident, a 71 year old woman was seriously hurt. the other incident that turned deadly happened in july of 2023 on third street and was initially considered an accident. the da's office says the suspect entered a not guilty plea. >> yesterday, the union that represents hundreds of workers at the women's federal prison in dublin is blasting the decision to permanently close it. the prison has been plagued by scandal and was first temporarily closed in the spring. the bureau of prisons announced the permanent closure last week, citing infrastructure and staffing. the union's letter reads in part, quote. this decision was made without warning, without consultation and, most disturbingly, right before the holiday season, a time that should be spent with loved ones not in uncertainty and fear for the future. the group is considering legal action. >> the manhattan district attorney is vowing accountability for the murder of unitedhealthcare ceo brian th
