fbi.gov/gilroy. the most important part of the story, the victims, those that run for their lives and survived, but sadly those three young people who did not. we begin with steven romero who came to th-0 festival with his mom and grandma.÷5 he just finishedóy kindergarten; the 13-year-old from san jose. she was her with her sister and mom. they were separated. the sister and mom ran into a local neighborhood. they pounded on some doors. a good samaritan gave them a ride to their car. from their car they went to a local hospital and that's where they got the bad news, the sad news that the child did not s survive. trevor was a recent graduate of a small college in upstate new york. he was visiting gilroy with his girlfriend. the girlfriend was noddt injure but trevor was killed. so many stories here and so many people across the bay area and across the country praying for these victims. >> i think tonight will be a way to help people heal, to help people recognize that we care. that's why we're here

here in gilroy let's take you high above.his is the park that is about a mile and a half from where i'm standing downtown. the fbi told us they will be here for three to five days more. th and they are trying to be as comprehensive as possible. they have doubled the amount of agents here in gilroy. any have 40 fbi specialists on site. it's working in terms of the pace because today they did locate a bag of ammunition near the creek. that creek is where the accessed the gilroy garlic festival. they located that bag of ammunition and they do believe it was a lone suspect, that 19-year-old from gilroy. we talked to the police chief about the three gilroy police officers who engaged with the suspect. >> i placed them on administrative leave. i did not want to put them in a position of having to come back to work and deal with all of this. i think it's a very emotional thing for them. it's one thing to be involved in a shooting, but then they were also in the middle of the people that were shot and then immediately went into the r

gilroy police are now saying 12 people were hurt. police responded in less than a minute, and killed the gunman. he's not been identified but sources tell our investigative unit the gunman was not on anyone's radar as a threat. witnesses talked about a possible second person involved but authorities are still trying to sort that out. we're expecting another news conference at 10:00 a.m. this morning. we'll have continued team coverage of this shooting. ali wolf has details on the youngest victims. scott mcgrew outlining how the suspect got inside the festival but let's start out with bob redell at the scene. he has more on the harrowing moments. bob? >> reporter: laura, the ap reports that one witness yelled at the shooter, shouted at him, "why are you doing this" and the shooter responded "because i'm angry." you have to walk through metal detectors and get past security with wands. akosccording to police the susp cut through a perimeter fence, crossed a creek and entered the festival that way. a number of people saw him as he appro

the hospital in gilroy if needed are nearby. gilroy is a town of 50,000 people. fairly compact. so the emergency services are nearby. the police station is down the street on 6th street as i remember. once the reports of gunfire ringing out at christmas hill park were received. and it didn't take long to round people up even while asking them to keep their hands up, rounding them up into an amphitheater and trying to get them away from where the shooting was happening. but still 60 minutes into this, we don't have confirmation of number of shooters, number of people who may have been wounded or killed. you've been following what social media has been saying. >> personal social media, that sort of thing. you get information and it's information that i'm not ready to report or say anything like that. what we can say right now is there's been an active shooter, multiple people down at the gilroy garlic festival. a number of people reporting that they were there or they've had a friend there. this is what they've heard. we don't report this is what they've heard. until we know for s

louise in gilroy. in total they received 19 patients at the two hospitals. 11 of those were gunsho wound victims and then eight of them were non-gunshot wound victims. so people who sprained their ankle when they were running away from the gunman during all of that chaos here in san jose at the santa clara am medical center they got seven patients in total. one of those patients was discharged tonight, that means that person is doing relatively well and six more are here. one of those patients unfortunately died earlier, two were discharged tonight and another one is still being treated there and is in serious condition tonight. so we remain here at the hospital waiting for updates. we do hope that more patients are discharged tonight and, you know, i'm just hanging onto that little bit of good news that this 12-year-old girl who was shot while her whole family surrounded her is doing better tonight. >> that really is good news. kate, we appreciate that update and really earlier we even heard because o

we are in gilroy with how the investigation proceeded today. and the search for a motive. >> reporter: investigators left around 10:00 this evening after spending the night processing the car of santino legan. it was parked near the creek trail you used to enter the garlic festival. late monday afternoon, agents from the sheriff's office, bomb squad, atf and fdi located the suspect car. using a robot at first, they carefully searched the silver sedan with nevada plates. he was parked half a mile away from christmas hill park. agents interviewed neighbors looking for surveillance video. she lives in the neighborhood and received a frantic call from her 16-year-old son. a festival volunteer who said he was one of the first to escape the gunfire. she said her son is still reliving the trauma from sunday evening. >> he did what he is supposed to do. he ran and ran and ran. and call me while he was running. it was horrible. but we are blessed. he made it out. i feel bad for the people that did not. >> reporter: earlier in the day, investigators sear

it's the 41st annual gilroy garl festival. we talked about it all last week here on "today in the bay." >> i know. >> so enpla people, at least 100,000 people attend that event. when the gunfire erupted, i found out quite quickly and i headed actually to the scene, i got as far as i could to do reports, but there were so many roads blocked off here, this is leading up to christmas hill park but there were literally people on almost every street corner as you were driving in to gilroy last night, just gathering, congregating, wanting to be together. so many people that were coming out of christmas hill park that i was talking to, they were numb. they didn't even know how to comprehend what they just experienced. >> i was just going to say that. you heard a lot of people talking yesterday when we saw the coverage here, they were just in shock, even when they saw, they heard the shots or they saw people running towards them. they say they were in shock. they didn't know what to do. >> it was an eerie feeling. it stays with me as

gilroy high isn't far from christmas hill park, where the gilroy garlic festival was going on when this shooting happened. gilroy police confronted the gunman within minutes of the shooting being reported. the gunman was shot and killed. however, several witnesses told police say saw a second person involved with the gunman at the shooting yesterday and that's the part of the investigation that continues during the overnight hours in to this morning. video posted show a frightening and chaotic scene after the gunfire was reported at the festival yesterday. you can hear the sense of alarm and fear as people rushed the exits at the garlic festival. this is around 5:40 yesterday. this was the third they of the garlic festival as the event was winding down. three people were shot and killed. 12 others injured. the officers confronted the gunman within minutes of the shooting, the gunman was shot and killed, police don't have information on a motive for the shooting or the type of weapon used and the gunman's identity has not been released but belief the gunman got in by using a tool to cut
