gina, are you worried about what you've seen? >> well, we've been calling for earnings misses for the better part of this year now. what we expected was that because earnings were propped up by margins and productivity for so long, whether that went away, we knew that eventually we were going to have to see some disappointments. not only were we seeing disappointments twlb is actually the worst revision cycle in 15 years. it's been extraordinary to see sort of the guidance, the negative guidance for 2013 and revisions. even with those negative revisions, we are still seeing misses. >> when do you think we'll see the earnings cycle bottom out, according to you, gina? >> well, we think there has to be some more significant guidance down for 2013. 2013 earnings are still up at $115. we know that that's way too high. we're expecting actually -- we've seen a lot of positive data coming from consumers and that's been driving some positive data flow. but where we're not seeing positive data is actually from businesses and any of the new

c-span: gina kolata, author of "flu: the story of the great influenza pandemic of 1918 and the search for the virus that caused it." other than being one of the longest titles we've had, why'd you write this? >> guest: i got in--i never really thought much about the flu. it just seemed like something that came around every year, and people would just get sick and then they'd get better again. and i'd never really been interested in it at all. but then a few years ago--i'm--i'm a reporter for the new york times, and i wrote an article for the times about a really miraculous discovery. there is a guy at walter reed army medical center and he was reporting in a--in a technical journal called science magazine that he had somehow managed to get some lung tissue from a soldier who had died in 1918. and in that lung tissue, there was still fragments of the virus that had killed him. and when i interviewed this man, dr. taubenberger, about his work, he told me about the influenza pandemic of 1918 and i was stunned. i just had never seen--i'd never heard of anything like this. it was the worst

gina martin adams from wells fargo has more on this. so good to have you here. you disagree with david bianco. >> i do. the fundamental case is actually weakening going forward. take a look at the sequence of earnings growth. we really started to see earnings teeter in the second quarter. that's continued into the third quarter. this is all a sequence that started in europe last year. and deteriorating export growth is the beginning. but the fiscal cliff uncertainties are exacerbating the impact. >> what if that gets solved? does that turn things around? >> if europe gets solved? >> no. the fiscal cliff. europe getting solved i have no hope for. >> all we need from europe is just a sign that things are no longer getting worse. we're still not seeing that. we just got pmis over the last week that suggests things are deteriorating. in terms of the fiscal cliff, i don't even know that we necessarily need to solve the fiscal cliff. we just need to have a revival in sentiment, revival in confidence. that probably comes with simply a plan getting set. we don't need to
