gina: i think we are really close.roblem we are contending with his persistence so peak supply chain disruption concern, we would've thought that would've happened in the second quarter. it continued into the third quarter. it may continue into the fourth quarter. it is not getting worse but it is more persistent. that is what is driving a lot of the margin expectations the client across the analyst community. is still bad, why is it still bad? we thought it would start to ease. tom: 2020 hindsight, i think last quarter and the quarter before, a lot of people missed the mark. are we doing that this time around where within the earnings margin gloom we may miss the mark and it is more optimistic than we expect? gina: absolutely possible, especially we see easing in the energy pressures. what has happened over the course of last six weeks is a remarkable search noted -- in energy costs. if those clear faster than expected, that could be -- that could give a tremendous amount of relief to forecast because that input cost

gina: i think it is a sector picker's market. you have certain segments where growth is slowing and inflation is accelerating, and it matters less which companies within energy you pick than just being endocyte at this point in time, that sector selection is incredibly important. beyond that, i think within the lagging sectors, picking the right stocks is incredibly important as well. you've got sectors like consumer staples, which is under pretty significant margin pressure. consumer discretionary, similar pressures emerging. picking a red company -- picking the right company is going to be very important to portfolio performance. jonathan: great to catch up with you, as always. gina martin adams of bloomberg intelligence. deconstructive view on this equity market. trying to dig through the release for procter & gamble this morning. net sales ok. guidance ok. you dig through the release and you start to see this stuff on costs come on prices, and wonder how difficult things will be into next year. tom: what i have heard this mor

gina: for the first time ever. alix: how are earnings going to matter? gina: i think they are mattering, they are just being overwhelmed by macro issues. when it comes down to it, at the beginning of september we started to notice some degradation in the forward outlook for earnings growth as a result of the fact inflation pressures were sticking around longer than analysts had anticipated. we started to see downgrades of -- downgrades from analysts. not massive downgrades with respect to the long-term economic outlook, but a downgrade for earnings growth for the short-term as a result of stickier than expected inflation pressures. inflation pressures have only expanded, some would say exponentially. the signals from the commodity complex are incredibly robust commodity prices, especially for energy over the last six months. we continue to see downside estimate revision coming out of analysts. alix: hang on one second because we are looking at president biden and treasury secretary janet yellen. let's listen in. pres. biden: thanks to those here as well
