joining us now live is nbc's gina kim, who is live in altadena, the scene of the eaton fire. and gina, this is one of the largest and most stubborn fires. what are you hearing from the front lines? well, janelle, as you mentioned, we are getting a little bit of a respite today. after four days of fierce winds, we had relatively calm winds and more humidity today. but we are about to lose sunlight here any minute now. and i just wanted to show you a sliver of what this fire did at the eaton fire, which is the most destructive fire among those burning here in southern california. you can see the erratic nature of it. we have tons of debris. this church almost completely gone down the street from it. all those other homes and structures gone. but then look across the street. you have another church here that is completely intact. even the windows didn't get any damage. and then as you go to the right even more, you have half of a building standing and then the other half of the building not standing. so this just goes to show you what we're seeing. it's just a little slice of wha

let's bring in nbc's gina kim now who joins us down in altadena. gina, nice to have you on the program. we hear so much of the destruction in pacific palisades and malibu, but it's really where you are just outside of pasadena that's seen the most destruction. what's the scope of the damage there? well, it is absolutely staggering. we got new numbers today. raj that confirmed what we were fearing is that this the structure damage here has actually gone up dramatically. we were talking about 4 to 5000 homes and businesses damaged or destroyed here in the eaton fire in altadena, in the foothills. we are now saying that it is more like 7000 plus. so the total damage from the palisades to eaton and everything in between, all the wildfires that we have here in southern california, the total pushes north of 12,300 homes, businesses and other structures that have been damaged or destroyed in just the past four days. of course, this is one of them here. this is very typical of eaton in altadena. you'll see this is a church. it's just so sad when you think a

nbc's gina kim has the latest from altadena.here in altadena, the site of the eaton fire, a curfew is now in effect. that means police and sheriff's department deputies are able to arrest anyone who gets near fire zones all throughout southern california. today, firefighters were able to make a little bit of progress in the fire thanks to less winds and higher humidity. having said that, the numbers remain staggering. we have more than 12,000 structures. these are homes and businesses that are expected to have been damaged or destroyed in all of the fires combined here in southern california, including this church that you see behind me. you see this over and over again here in altadena. these numbers are expected to change, as is the number of deceased. currently we have 11 confirmed deaths. but as fire officials move from fighting the fire to assessing the fire, that number is also expected to go up. the santa ana winds have not left us. we are expecting more winds. in fact, three more santa ana events in the week to come. so

nbc news correspondent gina kim is live on the fire lines this midday. gina. gusty winds have challenged firefighters for days now. so how's the wind right now? well, marcus and chris, we're happy to report that the conditions are actually improving for the first time in four days. we have a little bit of a respite today. having said that, a lot of areas like where am here in altadena, a little bit calmer. other areas expected to experience wind gusts of up to 70 miles an hour. so we are not out of the woods just yet. and as you mentioned, we're at one of the worst of these wildfires. we're at the eaton fire, and behind me you can see just one of the locations that have been destroyed. this is a family owned chevron gas station that went up in flames. we are told that there are thousands of gallons of gas right underneath. so it's a little bit of an emergency situation. they're trying to get chevron out here so that this does not create yet another problem. but take a look at the house behind it. there's like an apartment complex right behind the chevron gas s
