i'm joined by secretary of commerce gina raymundo. thank you for joining us.'s a fascinating story with this. i know you've been up and back on the hill many times to get this to this point. let me ask you the big question. why is this an important bill? why is in the priority? >> thank you, lisa. well, as you just said, every piece of modern medical equipment, every piece of military equipment, everything that needs a computer or that is digital runs on chips. and the reality is, we don't make very many chips in the united states of america. in fact, alarmingly, for the most sophisticated chips, we buy almost all of them from taiwan. we're incredibly dependent on asia and asian countries for our supply of chips including those that are necessary in all of our military equipment. and so the united states is at a risk and we need to make more of these on our shores in the united states so that we cannot only create jobs but protect our people. >> i haven't heard anyone disagree that with this idea that there's a need. but some folks say there are other needs. $

this is within the realm of the department of commerce and commerce. secretary gina raymundo paid tribute to all that you know about this startup ecosystem. what is your task? what are you going to do? and how do you know if you want? while secretary mando actually was a venture capitalist 25 years ago. so when she, when she was governor of rhode island, we had some discussions about ecosystems there. when she moved to washing dc to become the secretary of congress asked for some some of my thoughts on areas to the focus. and i, one of them was regional hobbs with other was to restart the national advisory council innovation entrepreneurs was i had shared more than a decade ago. so she agreed to do that and then asked me to the co chair at again. and i'm delighted to do it and look forward to working with a secretary and a great group of people to identify what some of the prior it should be that from a policy standpoint. so that we can take the next step beyond some of the work a decade ago. things like the jobs act and make sure we are us ring in this more inclusive innovation economy.

secretary gina raimondo says president biden will announce a decision on easing some china tariffs. biden said on sunday that his administration is still in discussions on the issue. raymundolso says u.s. lawmakers are playing politics with national security by delaying legislation, for boosting funding for domestic chipmakers to compete with china. secretary raimondo: if we are going to do this, what can they do on their side of the equation? while i cannot say for sure, certainly that is possible. if it does not happen immediately, it is something we will continue to pursue just in the interest of, as you say, fairness. if we are lifting tariffs, what are they going to do? su: you can hear more from our interview with commerce secretary raimondo in a few minutes, including details on the china discussions and issues around the chips bill. australian prime minister anthony albanese were promised a new era of climate action and energy intervention in a speech on tuesday to the sydney energy forum. he will repeat his promise for new legislation, including a target of emission cuts by 2030, netease zero by 2050. lawmakers say the targets don't go far enough, calling for a 60
