newt gingrich is scrambling to get his presidential bid back on track. thursday, his entire team of senior staffers abruptly quit, citing differences over the campaign. in a statement to cbs news, gingrich's former spokesman rick tyler said there was a path to victory. newt had a different path. when that happens they have to leave. his national chair has moved over to tim pawlenty's camp. they could join texas governor, rick perry who is reportedly considering a run for the white house. despite the major blow, the former house speaker is pushing forward giving a speech in california sunday night. on his facebook page he wrote -- i'm committed to running a substantive solutions-oriented campaign i set out to run earlier this spring. the gop frontrunner, mitt romney, is breaking with campaign trail tradition. on thursday he announced he would not be participating in any of the so-called "straw polls." the popularity contests are considered key in early voting states. the former massachusetts governor spent more than a million dollars to win the gop straw

newt gingrich.w, took a pretty big hit this week with the resignations of a number of his top staffers including his campaign manager. cnn deputy political director paul steinhauser is live in new hampshire, site of the debate. paul, good morning to you. everybody else might be putting this pressure on newt gingrich and saying he has to do well on monday night, but is he putting that same kind of pressure on himself? >> reporter: i'm sure quietly to himself he is. newt gingrich has been kind of defiant since most of his top staffers, advisers quit on thursday. he says he will endure on. he says he'll be at a speech tomorrow flight in los angeles and yeah, he says he'll be right here monday night for our debate, but t.j., a lot of questions for newt gingrich now. without a staff it's hard to campaign, let's be honest and a lot of his staff left, also raising money, not that easy to do. some of the staffers felt he wasn't committed enough to raise money and campaign. gingrich says he is very committed

from newt gingrich's team. several people resigned from his campaign. the trouble started last month when it was revealed gingrich was in major debt with high-end jeweler tiffany & company. things got worse when he went on a two-week vacation with his wife skipping an important conference with other presidential candidates. gingrich says he is relaunching his campaign sunday. we'll have more on his political changes coming up on the "cbs evening news with scott pelley." >>> pressure is mounting for congressman anthony weiner to resign but he refuses. the scandal over lewd pictures and messages that he sent to at least six women is not dying down especially now that a new explicit photograph has been published on the internet. today more of congressman weiner's fellow democrats joined the call for the congressman to step down. >> lying publicly about something like this is unforgivable and he should resign. >> even if weiner doesn't resign, he might end up losing his job. democrats could eliminate his congressio

they're not working for gingrich anymore. >> is gingrich toast?k he's going to be able to do a whole lot in new hampshire. he's the type of figure that already had very high name i.d. and, for better or for worse, it was pretty hard name i.d. in other words, people had pretty much already made up their mind about him. hard to break out of that, to start with. badly organized rollout. newt's a smart guy at times and has an idea every minute, but the problem is sometimes he can say things that he ends up having to explain. and you start right out with ryan on medicare and the way he criticized the house republican plan, and it just got worse from there. >> really quickly, like 15 seconds, who has to stand out in the debate tomorrow night? >> nobody. it's got to be -- >> survive? >> i think tomorrow night is introduction night, not decision night. >> i think it's an opportunity for tim pawlenty to try to move himself into a one-on-one campaign with mitt romney. it's still early. no one has to bedazzle. but it's an opportunity for pawlenty to pull out

this with newt gingrich is the same. he had a two week sail around the mediterranean to come up with what to say. he's always been a bad manager. i would frankly be interested in the congresswoman, she was there with him awhile. >> yeah. >> to what people perceive of gingrich's weakness, lack of discipline. people who quit as you well know, were not just paid political consultants, these are people in newt world, for them to walk away is a big deal. >> we had dial testing groups, independent voters watching the debate. i don't like to make too much of this, they track audience sentiment, what gets them excited and turns them off. i want to play a snip et that herman cane said, watch the dial group. >> i do not believe in sharia law in american courts. i believe in american laws in american courts, period. >>.
