[applause] so we have with us tonight a very special guest. i know that if i were simply to give the typical dinner circuit introduction, the one where you list every accomplishment of the speaker's biography, i promise you we would be here all night and even newt gingrich would get for himself. [laughter] his list of achievements in politics, his involvement in lifelong learning, his expertise in national security matters, his business interest, his endeavors, the dozens of books he has written, the list goes on and on. allow me to presume that all of us here are well acquainted with the important milestones in the light of newt gingrich. because i would like to focus on the future in some part. what i sincerely hope is that it's place in it as it relates to ideas is heard. let me explain. it is no secret to anyone here that the party of abraham lincoln and ronald reagan took a beating three weeks ago. republicrepublic ans lost the battle for the white house and the house and senate.

they did it with newt gingrich. they did wit dick armey. they did it in the '60s to former speaker joe martin. they did to it charles halleck. that's how gerald ford got to be the republican leader in congress before he ever became president. he got his leadership role thanks to a republican coup. there was a good article which we have linked to on the blog if you want to check it out. the short of it is republicans have a history of attacking their own relationship, overthrowing their own top dogs. but importantly, it is only republicans who do this. democrats do not do this. there is no history of a democratic speaker being overthrown by his or her side. but republicans seem to enjoy it. and tomorrow they will get another chance. house speaker john boehner faces a vote tomorrow in his own caucus as to whether or not he gets to remain speaker. the smart money says that he is going to keep his job, in part because nobody knows who else might want that job right now except for him. but it is never a good sign when you have to respond to repo

newt gingrich is an error lobbyist -- uber lobbyist. barney frank talk about michele bachmann. he also called out newt gingrich and said he held him responsible for the demonization of opponents that has contributed to the atmosphere we live in today. i do think he came into the house. he slashed all of the caucasus and civility. we are seeing this. this is a man who a few days ago talked about education reform in the context of firing the janitors in schools and putting the kids to work. a lot of the media called that unconventional. [laughter] let's repeal child labor laws that we fought hard for in this country. bring in dickens to chronicle it. i do think there is the cruelty amidst the reality show debates we have been subjected to. who is running this, entertainment or news? there is a cruelty when people cheer that someone dies without health care or bbo a soldier that dies in iraq. >> i am joking about herman cain. he is a guy who cannot hide the truth well. that makes me more comfortable with the idea that i know who he is about so i can make a decision. >> are you tal

newt gingrich knows that really hurts.licans lost deeply when we had a major government shutdown under president clinton. this would be even more dramatic than that. so those are some of the very big options if rationality does not prevail. >> jennifer: rationality has not been the strong suit of the republican party at least on the house side. they are going into this debt ceiling debate, though saying we the u.s. -- if we don't cut spending to an equivalent amount, that we're in danger of turning go greece. here is the senator quote . . . so let me -- let me just ask you about that, though. because people often compare the u.s. to greece if in fact we don't slash spending. is that a realistic concern? >> no, for a variety of reasons. first of all greece has been in default about 50% of the time over the last 150 years. the u.s. has never defaulted. number 2, the u.s. government is borrowing at near historic low rates about 1.9% on a ten-year treasury bond. the greek government is borrowing at i think around ten right now

clinton and gingrich can certainly attest to that. i think that the lesson is, if you remember back to the clinton and gingrich showdown in 1995 and early 1996, the republican party emerged from that changed a little bit. the republican party then in the first part of 1995 was just like the republican party. total hell bent on confrontation with president clinton. when they lost "lost" the shutdown of 1995 and 1996 they emerged -- yes, they still impeached bill clinton, but they were a slightly more reasonable party in terms of reaching compromises on other issues with clinton from that point forward. >> let me ask you. if they're just threatening a downgrade, again, what is your view on how bad that is for the u.s. economy? ? i mean, there are lots of perilous things that will kick into place. >> in the short-term, sadly, perversely not so bad. >> right. >> i don't think it's going to have a huge impact on -- short-term. the question is it's a long-term thing, and that's two, three, four, five, ten years out, and that's what you are
