and if a trump-gingrich ticket loses, newt gingrich speaking fees will skyrocket after the campaign. but newt gingrich can be almost as polarizing a figure as donald trump, which leaves 57-year-old mike pence, the governor of indiana, who has been planning to run for re-election even though indiana polls indicate that that could be a hard climb. mike pence is a darling of republican conservatives. he has the washington experience as a member of congress that donald trump has indicated he's looking for. and in the time that donald trump and newt gingrich have had six wives between them, mike pence has had only one. mike pence is calmer and steadier than chris christie or newt gingrich in public speaking. not much of an attack dog. >> i just want to pick somebody who's very good. somebody who's solid, who's smart. i'm not looking for an attack dog. >> and so mike pence it is. if he can pass the vetting of the trump children. vice presidential vetting has been a haphazard affair in the trump campaign. you'll remember when ben carson was put in charge of vice presidential vetting for abo

newt gingrich was running.allegations he sought an open marriage from one of his wives. the circumstances of one of his divorces with his wife suffering from cancer at the time. that has been an issue in his political career. donald trump already has a gender gap problem. would it make it worse to put newt gunning riingrich on there? the other, age. newt gingrich 72 years old. you'd have two candidates over 70 years old in terms of appealing to a younger generation of voters. would that be a liability? and also newt gingrich, he has the congressional experience. another one of the cons is the way it ended in 1998 after republicans suffered a pretty bad midterm election. an unexpectedly bad midterm election, one defined by the clinton impeachment drive. newt gingrich essentially forced out of his job as speaker, forced out of congress by his fellow republicans. not necessarily something that would recommend him for this job. but let's talk more about the veepstakes, about the big audition tonight. the best perso

think about newt gingrich. i think that's exactly what he wants, the head of the justice department, something that he has a long history. so there are some pretty good consolation prizes for the final two. >> look, david this is an important pick. one of the most serious decisions a candidate makes during a presidential election. do vp picks move votes? is it a different calculation when it comes to donald trump? >> yeah, i don't think they have a huge impact in moving votes towards a candidate. i think they may -- sometimes if it doesn't go well move votes away from a candidate. here's the thing, i think it's a good question. it is the -- basically the only truly presidential style decision making moment that a candidate has who's running to become president. and it gives much insight into the way they think, how they execute on that. how it reflects on donald trump or hillary clinton is so much more important i think than the candidate themselves, the number two on the slot. especially with these two candida
