speaker gingrich calls up and say, my path to getting the nomination, what did you tell him to do? >> he's had a good debate performance. he has to take the debate performances, in which he has appeared an adult. he set the right tone n. many debates -- it's getting worn when he attacks the media. but he has been shown as the most knowledgeable and well-informed person on the stainless steel. he needs to take it off the stage and put it in town hall meetings in iowa and new hampshire and south carolina. he needs to be as energetic in the campaign in the early states as he is in the 90 minutes on the debate stage and show as much information and as much information and am and experience as he does in the debates. but he's virtually invisible in those early states. you can't just win this by showing up for 10 or 12 debates and not impress in the early states in a very aggressive fashion. i was in chicago recently and a guy said to me, newt gingrich isn't going to win. i said, really? that's a pretty strong statement. i said, why do you say that? >> i'm on the board of the museum and

now after perry's appalling debate performances, it has gone to cain and night gingrich is picking up too. the republicans are shopping around and looking. what's interesting, romney is allegedly the front-runner. but he can't ever get past 22 to 25%. three quarters of the republicans want somebody else so that doesn't really make him inevitable or a front-runner. >> why do you loathe mitt romney snoech and i'm going to quote something that you wrote. one thing that is very obvious from the debates is romney believes in being the manager of big government. he does not see big government as a problem. only as something to be well managed. >> that pretty much says it. big government, to quote ronald reagan, government is not the solution. government is the problem. and big government is a really big problem. it is a -- big government does not work. we have hundreds of billions of dollars in way of. this is just what the government accounting office has identified. what we're looking for is a candidate who will shrink the sigh of government. that's not mitt romney. >> is it herman cain?

speaker gingrich has come up a little bit, most republicans think a great debater, smart man. who else in the second tier has the most at stake tonight? >> you know, newt has been, collectively, i like debates best when going against obama, not against each other. other than romney on health care, we really need to hear more against obama? and really, newt's been the best at that, he's completely rehabilitated whatever credibility he lost at the beginning and it's not -- i don't know that he has the most to gain in this contest -- >> pick one person in the second tier who you watch is somebody who might come out, you think it's newt? >> i think so, yeah. >> if perry doesn't have a good debate tonight and he starts leaking air again, then i think mary's exactly right. he's had -- newt gingrich had several good debates, demonstrated some strength. there's a bit of a newt boom out there. but i'd keep an eye on bachmann. she's had several weeks to regroup and you're beginning to see her get her feet on the ground. that's another candidate to watch tonight. >> already. we will watc

romney follows by 21 and rick perry slipped to sixth place now with 6% support as we see gingrich move up. walk us through these numbers, jan. >> what's striking about this poll is how big of a hill rick perry is going to have to climb if he gets back into this race. he led his our poll one month ago and now his numbers almost flipped with herman cain. they just jumped right past each other. what is also very interesting is i think that says the more that people see rick perry, the more they seem to like herman cain. the other thing we're seeing in this poll is that mitt romney's numbers while these two are flipping back and forth and we've seen people come and go, mitt romney's numbers are staying very consistent. he has been in second place, like he is today, or tied for first. so, we're seeing him kind of having this ground of support that i think will bode well for him as this thing goes forward. >> when we look at some of the other numbers from this poll, a lot of people are paying attention to this race. 70% of registered voters say they're paying attention. 31% are paying a lot of
