>> reporter: police removed him from the school in northwest washington yesterday. 31-year-old giovanni pena is charged with sexual abuse of a child. he teaches english to fourth graders. half his class are native spanish speakers. at noon this parent took her daughter in mr. pena's class home from school early. >> i'm troubled and disturbed like everybody else in school. my daughter is scared. she tells me she is scared. and i'm picking her up early because of this incident. i hope this will get results. >> reporter: in 2011 giovanni pena won the "washington post" d.c. teacher of the year award after being nominated by the d.c. teacher's union on. monday of this week, the youth investigation division of the metropolitan police department received information regarding an alleged sexual abuse involving mr. pena and a juvenile at the school. now the court documents released this evening refer to the boy, not by his name but by his officials to protect his identity. it says the sexual contact took place in the school in the school year, 2013/2014 which would make this boy about 9 at the time.
