neck. >> reporter: but zoo officials say murphy and ernie turned aggressive toward each other over the weekend. while it's not unusual behavior for giraffese them overnight into sunday as a precaution. when zoo officials returned sunday morning, ernie was standing with his head bowed unusually low and they knew something was wrong. the zoo's medical staff converged onto the scene. >> as they searched before, taking his vitals and whatnot, ernie fell over and he passed away on his own. that was probably the -- that was probably the most --, i never want to see or experience anything like that again. >> reporter: at fires it was believed ernie may have died from a possible neck injury sustained while tussling with murphy but the cause of death cannot be confirmed until a.m. personning necropsy is performed. they hope to open their giraffe exhibit sometime next month. but she says that only happen when everyone feels comfortable with the idea. >> we know that we're not the only ones mourning the loss of ernie and so we're going to do this hopefully sooner than we expected to do it but again, we really need to make sure that murphy is ready f
